About the Artists

The Dover Quartet's rise from being an up-and-coming young ensemble to occupying a spot at the top of their field has been "practically meteoric," in the words of Strings magazine. Catapulted to prominence after winning the 2013 Banff International String Quartet Competition, the group has become a major international presence. With its burnished warmth, incisive rhythms, and natural phrasing, the Quartet's distinctive sound has helped confirm its status as "the young American string quartet of the moment" (The New Yorker). Named as Cleveland Quartet Award winner for the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons, the group was also awarded an Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2017.

In 2017-18 the Dover Quartet performs more than a hundred concerts across North America and Europe, including performances for the Kennedy Center, Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, Library of Congress, Carnegie Hall and Amsterdam's Concertgebuow, in addition to their Detroit appearance. Highlights of recent seasons have included cycles of the complete Beethoven quartets on three major chamber music series in the U.S., a European tour and concerts at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, London's Wigmore Hall and the Lucerne Festival.

One of only two wind players to have been awarded the Avery Fisher Prize since the award's inception in 1974, David Shifrin is in constant demand as an orchestral soloist, recitalist and chamber music collaborator. Mr. Shifrin has appeared with the Philadelphia and Minnesota Orchestras among many others in the US, and internationally with orchestras in Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Japan, Korea and Taiwan. He has served as principal clarinetist with the Cleveland Orchestra and American Symphony Orchestra (under Stokowski), among others. An artist member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center since 1989, David Shifrin served as its artistic director from 1992 to 2004. He has also been the artistic director of Chamber Music Northwest in Portland, Oregon since 1981. Mr. Shifrin's recordings have consistently garnered praise and awards, including three Grammy nominations and Record of the Year by Stereo Review.
