Tonya Pinkins Joins THE POP SHOW PRESENTS...ELTON JOHN! at Birdland, 5/27
Tony Award winner Tonya Pinkins (Caroline, or Change, Play On!, Jelly's Last Jam, "All My Children") has joined the lineup for the May 27 edition of The Pop Show, part of the Broadway at Birdland series at Birdland Jazz Club. The 7pm concert will feature songs from the Elton John catalog.
Pinkins joins a lineup that includes previously-announced Tony Award winner Len Cariou (Sweeney Todd, Applause, A Little Night Music), Natalie Douglas (7-time MAC Award-Winning Vocalist), Van Hughes (American Idiot, 9 to 5, Hairspray),Christopher Jackson (In The Heights, Memphis), Kyle Dean Massey (Next to Normal, Wicked, Altar Boyz), Leslie McDonel(American Idiot, Hairspray), Jarrod Spector (Jersey Boys, Les Miserables) and Daniel Quadrino (Bye Bye Birdie).
The announcement was made today by John Capo, the creator and producer of The Pop Show. The Broadway at Birdland series is presented by Jim Caruso.
Pop decadence done right: Each month we pick a different pop music theme. Irresistible performers collide with the pulsating Pop Show Band and Singers to bring you rare, unexpected, once-in-a-lifetime singer/song pairings, creating a unique and intense auditory experience. Depending on the show, it could be pop. It could be country. It could be 70s soul or 80s glam. It could be an entire concert of Amy Winehouse songs. Or The Doors. Or One Direction. (But probably not One Direction.) Surprise guests, audience giveaways and delirious musical merriment make The Pop Show New York's most unmissable and unpredictable concert event.
The May edition of The Pop Show centers on the iconic songs of Elton John. Featuring the soul-searching ballads, the most rockin' uptempos and everything in between, proceeds from the Elton John show benefit The Trevor Project, an organization focused on suicide prevention in the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning communities.
Each edition of The Pop Show also features the pulsating Pop Show Band and Singers, a group of eight singers and musicians who accompany the performers to create a unique and intense auditory experience. The Pop Show Band and Singers features Mike Rosengarten, Cody Owen Stine, Adam Wolfe, Melanie Brook, Melanie Burg and Clint Carter music directorBrandon Sturiale.
Future editions of The Pop Show will feature a variety of pop music artists and themes, from motown to hip hop, 70s soul to 90s grunge and everything in between.
