Annual SCHUBERTIADE Concert Set for Tonight at Elder Hall
Now in its third year the annual Schubertiade concert, 6.30pm tonight 20 July, has become an increasingly popular and much-loved, mid-winter concert tradition at Elder Hall.
Mulled wine on entry, Sachertorte and coffee at interval and of course the music of the great Schubert, the audience will believe they have been transported back to elegant 19th century Vienna.
As is traditional at Schubertiade the program is entirely Schubert and includes some of the composer's greatest works; the 'Great' Sonata in B-flat Major performed by Lucinda Collins, Head of Keyboard at the Conservatorium. The acclaimed Australian String Quartet will be joined by special guest Ewen Bramble, cello, for the double cello String Quintet in C.
Both The Sonata and the String Quartet were composed just weeks before Schubert's early death and are imbued with a poignancy and power that make them two of Schubert's greatest compositions.
"Schubertiade captures the spirit and atmosphere of the original Viennese events with social gatherings held in salons. At these Schubert would play at the piano and, when the audience was rapt with attention, present his latest piano works, chamber music or songs.
