Not since 1958 has Adelaide seen a fully staged production of the classic opera 'Amahl and the Night Visitors', now being brought to life in 2014 by Adelaide producers Emma Knights and Karen Lettice at the Space Theatre.
An enchanting and inspiring fable about the transformative power of love; Gian Carlo Menotti's 'Amahl and the Night Visitors' stands alongside Dicken's 'A Christmas Carol' as a beloved Christmas classic. Essentially a play set to music, this one act opera/musical (the most performed opera in the world today) recounts the exciting, amusing and life-changing events of the night Amahl, a disabled shepherd boy, receives an unexpected visit from the Three Kings no less!
A unique work, in that it was originally written for television rather than the stage, Menotti's 'Amahl and the Night Visitors' premiered on the NBC network on Christmas Eve 1951. As a result of its unparalleled success, the program rescreened every year for the next 16 years.
Showcasing the remarkable talents of 12 year olds Finn Green and Aidan Hutson-Hill, in the company of some of South Australia's finest opera singers, with stunning music, vibrant costumes, electrifying choruses, dancing and laughter, this is a story that will tug at your heart strings.
A celebration of South Australian creativity, 'Amahl and The Night Visitors" is produced, directed, costumed, choreographed, designed, conducted, sung and performed excusively by Adelaide based artists.
A fairytale story that appeals to audiences of all ages, Amahl and the Night Visitors is the perfect way to introduce your children to opera. Don't miss this family treat guaranteed to put everyone in the Christmas spirit!
