EQUUS concluded its 22-week engagement as scheduled on Broadway on February 8th, 2009. The play opened in September 2008 at the Broadhurst Theatre, marking the Broadway debut of Daniel Radcliffe. Actor Jamie Bell, the award winning actor who created the role of Billy Elliot in the film version can currently be seen on the big screen in 'Defiance', he spoke to People magazine about working on that film as well as his performance in Billy Elliot. On dealing with fame and an Oscar nomination at age 13, he explained, 'I had my mom. The day I got back from the Oscars, she said, 'Great. Now take out the trash.' Bell, now 22, also explains that the other kids at school would, 'Chase me around school, I didn't know of they wanted to beat me up or congratulate me.'
Variety is reporting some very good news for the world of theatre, while Broadway is dealing with a bit of a 'chill', the West End is heating up with record box office scores.
The entertainment bible reports that for the the week commencing Dec. 29, 'the London production of 'Wicked' grossed ?885,294 ($1.28 million), the highest weekly tally of its entire London run, while 'Billy Elliot' also broke its own weekly box office record'. The Queen musical 'We Will Rock You,' which just celebrated its seventh birthday at the Dominion Theater, achieved the highest number of paid admissions in one week for any West End show in 2008.

In the current weekend edition of the New York Times Arts Section, Times theater critics Ben Brantley and Charles Isherwood offer their 'Top Ten' choices for the stage for 2008.
Entertainment Weekly picked the best and worst of stage for 2008, the musical BILLY ELLIOT topped the list as best, musicals made a strong showing in general. Melissa Rose Bernardo, the stage editor for the magazine cast a wide net for her choices including BAM and Off-Broadway in addition to typical main stage fare.
