Audition Notes for the PCA Production of

The Producers by Mel Brooks and Tom Meehan

NO SMALL PARTS IN THIS ONE! EVERY MEMBER OF THE CAST IS ON AND OFF
STAGE AT A RAPID PACE! Just the week of auditions for The Producers
is a commitment. Please review the rehearsal calendar/conflict sheet
in the audition packet and be prepared to provide directors with a
precise list of conflicts you have for this production on April 7th.



Audition packets (including music) available NOW for pickup in the PCA
Gallery. PCA Box office hours are 10-3 Tues-Sat and 11-3 Mon.



We want to provide you numerous opportunities to “show us your stuff”
and whether or not you can take direction without nerves, fear or ego
preceding you. The goal for this show is for auditioners to walk away
feeling the audition itself was profitable and more important,
enjoyable! PCA is not Hollywood or Broadway, but it is a high quality
community theatre. The directors of this show are dedicated to
helping you find your personal best.



Synopsis: Brash and brazen Max Bialystock is a flop as a Broadway
producer. But when his loudmouth life approach is paired with the
thoughts of timid accountant, innocent Leo Bloom, Max becomes positive
that his scheme involving dancing Nazis, little old ladies, and lots
and lots of money will mount to Broadway’s worst musical and make them
rich in the process.

The Cast:

Max Bialystock, male (age 40 to 60) a Jewish con-man (strong vocalist)

Leo Bloom, male (age 25-45) a bookworm accountant (strong vocalist)

Franz Liebkind, male (age 45 – 70) a Nazi loving playwright (strong vocalist)

Roger De Bris, male (age 35-55) a Gay director (strong vocalist)

Carmen Ghia, male (age 35-55) the Gay director’s boyfriend (can do
Rex Harrison-like vocals)

Ulla, female (age 25-45) a Swedish Blonde Bombshell (strong
vocalist who can belt a song!)



The Ensemble: Males and Females who play multiple roles throughout
and must be strong, versatile vocalists:

n Theatergoers

n Little Old Ladies and Jurists

n Gay Houseboys

n Singing Accountants

n Nazis

n Convicts

n African American Male(reminiscent of the character in Showboat who sings Old

Man River

Other Roles: Males (not necessarily singers and can be multiple roles
for two actors)

n Mr. Marks, Sergeant, Jack, Judge, Storm Trooper

Dance Ensemble:

Females who can dance in a range of styles – Rockettes-like, Old
Ladies with walkers, Chorus Girls, Nazis, Convicts and more!

Males who can dance in a range of styles – Old Ladies (yep) , Chorus
Boys, Convicts, Nazis and more!



AUDITIONS: April 7, 8, PCA Mainstage 7:00 p.m./April 9th and 10th PCA
Stage Too 7:30 p.m.

April 7th -- Doors open at 6:00 p.m. for audition form completion,
photo and number distribution. Please accomplish this check-in
procedure by 7:00 p.m.

April 8th -- Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for group vocal warm up with Linda Sheehan.



Sunday, April 7th – 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Dance and Movement
Auditions. All those auditioning must do a dance or simple movement
audition for choreographer, Carie Hughes who will be teaching the
routines immediately following opening remarks. Please wear
appropriate attire. This is a HIGH ENERGY show, and all actors will
move scenery as part of the comedic action of the show. Carie asks
that you warm up before 7:00 p.m. Carie may need you to stay for the
entire evening. Dance and movement questions should be directed to:

Monday, April 8th – 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. Vocal Auditions. When Mel
Brooks contacted Tom Meehan (Annie) about how to write his first
musical (the book, lyrics and music) from his 1960’s movie, The
Producers, Meehan told him, “Take all the important dialogue and turn
it into musical numbers – the music must make the story!” Music
Director, Linda Sheehan, would like all those auditioning to sing a
song from the show. Auditioners may also sing a song of choice,
though it is not required. (Show music is provided in the audition
packet.) Linda may ask you to stay for the entire evening. Vocal
music questions should be directed to:

Tuesday, April 9th – 7:30 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. Acting Auditions. Stage
Director, Cathy Hahn, requests that you come in proper attire for
physical warm ups and some improvisational acting. Dialogue sides
from the show will be provided. The production calls for strong,
flexible comedic performers; some who must be capable of daunting
physical and vocal challenges. This is not the show for the
inhibited. Just when you think you are over the top, she will ask
you to double or triple your efforts! Again, actors may need to stay
for the whole evening. Acting questions should be directed to:

Wednesday, April 10th – 7:30 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. Callbacks.

Thursday, April 11th – Directors cast the show.

Friday, April 12th – Cast is posted.

Performance Dates:

June 10 – Preview/Press Night

June 13, 14, 15, 20, 21, 22, 27, 28, 29 at 7:30 p.m. June 16, 23 at
2:00 p.m.
