A PROPER PLACE

Critchton: Early 40's, the proper British butler of Loam Manor, stoic, loyal and strong. Proud to serve Lord Loam and his family in utmost British form. A born leader himself. A deep spirit and wide thinker. Rich baritone.

Lord Loam: The Earl of Loam. Mid 50s to 60s. An upper class British peer who has lost his edge a bit. Befuddled, loving, and unique in his ideas about equality. Baritone.

Honorable Earnest Woolley: Nephew of Lord Loam, promised to his youngest daughter. Because of his station he is uppity and affected British cad. Always trying to have the last laugh, comic timing is a must. Baritone.

Rev. John Treherne: The family clergyman. Muscular, not bad looking. Has an eye on the middle daughter. Keeps the peace as much as possible though he often doesn’t know how to bring forth his natural charm. Tenor.

Lady Mary: The eldest, haughtiest and prettiest of Loam’s daughters. Mid to late 20s. She is bored with her arranged engagement and sees everyone as beneath her. Must possess ability to transform to a woman of warmth, grace and kindness. Falls in love with Crichton. Strong soprano

Lady Catherine: The middle daughter, early 20s and usually the one to get passed over. She is infatuated with Reverend Treherne and follows the orders of her elder’s sister. Comic timing is a must. Mezzo/Alto.

Lady Agatha: The youngest daughter perhaps 18-20. She is the most girlie of the three but quite sweet. Ernest (her cousin) seems to wait on her hand and foot as they are promised to be married. High Soprano.

Tweeny: A lowly kitchen wench. Early 20s. Wide-eyed and unsure, but has spunk and brashness. She and Crichton have taken a liking to each other. Comic timing a must. Strong belter.

Lord Brocklehurst: A wealthy upperclassman, engaged to the eldest daughter Mary. Pompous , opinionated and has a distain for the idea of “equality.” He is clear that servants are there to serve him. He and Mary have a “not-so-loving” relationship, as he is only after her money. Will double in ensemble.

Ensemble: 4 men. 3 women. Play servants, Society people, deckhands, animals on the island. Special parts include Fisher- Mary’s Ladies maid, Mrs. Perkins, the house keeper.
