SEEKING:

ARCHIBALD CRAVEN
(Baritenor, C3-Ab4) 40’s – Has retreated from the world and become a recluse in the wake of losing his beloved wife. He cannot escape his profound grief, and has shirked the care of his ill son and his home to his brother. He has a tremendous capacity for kindness, love and warmth but the great loss of his wife Lily and fear has caused him to protect himself and isolate himself and maintain a distant and moody exterior. He suffers from a hunchback -- but it as much psychological as it is physical.

LILY CRAVEN
(1st Soprano 1 to C6; D6’s at the end of #15, #24) late 20’s – 30’s’ – Archibald Craven’s deceased wife. In life, she was gentle, beautiful and kind, and she loved her husband deeply. She had an affinity for the roses that blossomed in her secret garden, and all growing things. She died in childbirth, but her loving presence remains in the memories of those who loved her. As a spirit she must now try to heal and bring together her husband and niece.

DR. NEVILLE CRAVEN
(Baritone, C3-F4) mid 30’s-40’s –Archibald’s younger brother. The disgruntled second son who will not inherit the family’s grand estate and fortunes – and feels that this is a great injustice. He resents his brother for neglecting his duties as the lord of the manor, as well as for leaving him in care of Archibald’s sickly child. He is not an malicious man, but his conditioning of always being second to Archibald in inheritance, love, and otherwise has hardened him through the years.

DICKON
(Pop/rock Tenor2 – C3-G4) – Should appear to be in his mid to late teens. Charismatic, warm and compelling -- with a very mystical quality. He is sort of a faun-like “wild boy” who spends much of his time making friends with wild animals, tending to the life of plants, and in close commune with nature. He develops a lovely friendship with Mary and inspires in her curiosity for life, and a passion for restoring the secret garden. There should be teen pop-idol feel to him. In Mary’s eyes he is like a rock star.

CAPTAIN ALBERT LENNOX
(Tenor2 – Bb2-A4) – mid 30’s -40. A dashing army officer – tall and handsome. He is torn between his love for his vain, difficult wife – and his young daughter who his wife resents and neglects.

AYAH
(Alto; has some very high range in #13 but can sing down octave) – 20’s-40’s –Mary’s Indian nanny. Loving, caring, comforting and strong -- but challenged with the care of an often difficult, selfish and rebellious child. She sometimes resents the subservient role that life has handed her.
