Breakdown

SEEKING THE FOLLOWING ROLES:

BERNIECE
(35) Female, African-American. Mother of an 11 year old daughter, Maretha, and brother to Boy Willie. She lives with Maretha and her uncle Doaker. Still in mourning for her husband after three years and blames Boy Willie for his death. Strong, reserved and guarded. Born and raised in Mississippi but now lives in Pittsburgh. She fights to preserve what she sees as her heritage. Sexual but repressed. Level-headed and organized, she’s wary of change. Can easily stand up to the men in her family.

WINING BOY
(56) Male, African-American. Doaker’s elder brother and Berniece and Boy Willie’s uncle. He tries to present the image of a successful musician and gambler, but his music, his clothes and even his manner of presentation are old. Charismatic and the life of the party, he is a man who looking back over his life continues to live it with an odd mixture of zest and sorrow. PLAYING THE PIANO IS A MAJOR PLUS.

BOY WILLIE
(30) Male, African-American. Berniece’s brother. He has an infectious grin and a boyishness that is apt for his name. Brash and impulsive, talkative and somewhat crude in speech and manner. Still lives in Mississippi, he has come to Pittsburgh with his friend and partner Lymon, in the hopes of selling the family piano in order to buy a piece of land back home. Self-confident, outgoing, clever, determined to get what he wants.

DOAKER
(47) Male, African-American. Wining Boy’s younger brother and Berniece and Boy Willie’s other uncle. He lives with Berniece and Maretha. For all intents and purposes he has retired from the world, though he works full-time as a railroad cook. While he maintains a neutral view of whether the piano should be kept or sold, he understands Berniece’s desire not to sell it so that the legacy of their family may remain.

LYMON
(29) Male, African-American. Boy Willie’s friend and partner from Mississippi. He talks little, and then with a straightforwardness that is disarming. He thinks of himself as a ladies man but is not very successful at it. Fine to let Boy Willie take the lead, he is ready to step up when the time is right.

AVERY
(38) Male, African-American. Honest and ambitious, he has taken to the city like a fish to water, finding in it opportunities for growth and advancement that did not exist for him in the rural South. Born and raised in Mississippi, he now lives in Pittsburgh. An aspiring preacher trying to build a congregation, he works as an elevator operator. Wants to settle down and marry Berniece.

GRACE
(20’s) Female, African-American. A confident, attractive city girl who loves the night life. Boy Willie’s pick up for the night. Pretty and fun, she doesn’t like to cause trouble or be around it.
