African-American, late-20s to early-40s, born into slavery in Charleston Dembi is a romantic, but it’s not a soft or poetic romanticism. He's tough and so are his dreams. He's also almost as sexy as he is smart. And he's very smart. His past weighs heavily on him, but even when he's tormented by it, he prides himself on carrying it lightly. Ages considerably throughout the course of the play. Brief partial nudity.
