The play is set in the city of Jinling in the 1750s and 60s.

A DREAM OF RED PAVILIONS is one of the most beloved classics in Chinese literature and tells the love story of the Stone and the Flower - two spirit beings who come down to earth - as Baoyu (Precious Jade) and Daiyu (Dark Jade). Set against the backdrop of the rise and fall of the aristocratic Jia family, this play portrays the elite class of 18th century Qing Dynasty China, a world of wealth, privilege and intrigue. The play spans 20 years.

Jia Baoyu
A young man, born with a piece of jade in his mouth. Age 12-20

Jia Yuanchun
His oldest sister, a palace scribe/ doubles/ as Fairy

Fairy False
a Dream figure who predicts Bao Yu’s future

Jia Tanchun
His second sister; age teen -20

Jia Xichun
His third sister; age teen-20 who in later life joins a nunnery

Jia Zheng
His father, a court minister

Dowager/ Granny
Jia Zheng’s mother age over 70; doubles as Granny Liu, a distant country cousin

Lin Daiyu
A cousin, Jia Zheng’s sister’s daughter age 11 -20 in reduced circumstances

Xue Baochai
Another cousin, Jia Zheng’s brother’s daughter age 11-20’s

Wang Xifeng
A poor cousin late 20’s -30’s who manages the household with iron hand

Qin Keqing
A distant relative – a young, amorous wife; may double with Yuanchun and Fairy
