A DOLL’S HOUSE
Seeking:

Nora Helmer
Early 30’s. Married for about 7 years. Smart, quick-witted, good sense of humor, a homemaker, ebullient, self deprecating, generous, mischievous. A diplomat. She has the energy of a tornado. Lonely, in that she’s keeping secrets. She can’t tell anyone the truth. A good wife and mother of two. Was passed straight from her father to her husband. She has tremendous love and respect for her husband. He is heroic in her eyes. She would do anything for him. Believes he would do anything for her. She’s able to manipulate men. Her flirtations have many colors, subtleties. She is an expert. She can be sexy, coy, play dumb, play the little girl, talk sultry. Something for every occasion. She likes fine things, because as an adult, she’s always worried about money. Thorwald thinks she’s an extravagant spender, but she’s not. She’s frugal. Counts every penny. When the illusions shatter, something cracks in her. She drops all masks.

Christina Linden
Nora’s childhood friend. A few years older than Nora. From an early age she has made life decisions for the sake of others. Married a man she didn’t love to be able to provide for her family. Has had a lonely life. A widow. She has always struggled to survive. Resourceful. Wise.

Doctor Rank
40’s. A Chekhovian character. Dying of syphilis inherited from his father. Lonely. A realist. Has a dry acerbic wit. In love with nora. Nora and Rank have a real connection. He sees her. She shows him sides of herself which she does not show her husband. He loves her spirit.

Nils Krogstad
40’s/50s. A widower and a good father. Works as a clerk at the bank with Thorwald. Lends money on the side. He’s just trying to survive. Has been dealt many blows in life. Lonely. Feels like a failure. Despairing. Feels backed into a corner by circumstance and attacks for the sake of his children. To be able to provide. Is outraged by the hypocrisies of this society. Not a villain.

Anna
60’s. Nurse to the Helmer’s children. She gave up her own child for adoption to be raised by strangers in order to work as Nora’s nanny. Was and remains both an employee and mother to Nora. A warm woman. Lower class.

Ellen
20’s. Maid for the Helmer household. A young, polite woman. Not a sexual competitor to Nora.

Porter
20’s/30’s. A young worker. Lower class.

_________

THE FATHER
Seeking:

Laura
Late 30’s/early 40’s. Married for about 17 years. A smart, tough, independent woman who has for many years been in a marriage in which she feels trapped.
Maternal by nature. At the beginning of her marriage, she mothered her husband. But the dynamic changed soon after. She has managed to find a way to endure under what she perceives to be the tyranny of her husband. They are somewhat estranged and have functioned more as business partners than lovers for a long time. Laura is the mother of a 14 year old girl. The war against her husband, depicted in the play, is born out of her fierce love for her child. She will do anything for her child. When the Captain decides to take control of the child’s upbringing, when he asserts total authority over both of them, like a cornered animal, Laura feels she has no other choice but to destroy him.

Pastor
30’s/40’s. Laura’s brother. The Captain’s close friend. Married. A religious man, but not a fanatic. Sensible. Level headed. Sense of humor.

Doctor Ostermark
An outsider to the house. Has the objectivity of a scientist. Listens with concern to everyone. Stoic. Practical. Resists being pulled into the fray until the Captian’s rage reaches a dangerous pitch.

Margaret
late 60’s. The Captain’s former nurse. Now servers in the household as Bertha’s nurse. Religious. Provincial. Warm. Maternal. Lower class. Had one child of her own. Wants peace in the house.

Bertha
Reads 14 years old. The Captain and Laura’s daughter. Bright and sweet young girl who loves both her parents deeply.

Njod
20’s. The captain’s orderly. A straight talker. Clever. Obedient. There’s something rough in his honesty. Lower class. There’s room for a touch of humor in the role.
