After presenting Jenufa successfully in 1998, the Teatro Municipal de Santiago, in his ongoing mission to expand repertoires, another major release in Chile Leoš Janá?ek opera Katia Kabanova (1921). Based on the play The Storm, the Russian Alexander Ostrovsky, is a tragedy about guilt and sin, treated in a score imposing sweeping force. The main character is a young, sensitive woman, tied to a cold and mediocre husband, dominated by his mother of immense authority and prejudiced. In such condition, Katia experienced true love with a man who understands, but can not release it. Cornered by the distressing because of his adultery, she does not hide, she commits suicide by jumping into the Volga River after an eerie monologue, recorded among the most impressive scenes of XX century opera. Katia Kabanova is an opera where Slavic folk melodies acquire strong leadership and masterfully portray nature and the deepest emotions of the soul.
