Joe's Pub Announces Tammy Faye Starlite as Nico 7/9, The Blow 7/9

Joe's Pub at The Public Theater debuted in October 1998 and has quickly became one of New York City's most celebrated and in-demand showcase venues for live music and performance. With its genre-blind booking and vast diversity of interests, the stage at Joe's Pub gives voice to a world of varied and stellar artists.

Inspired by the economic depression, the same sort of fearful political clime that led o the rise of the Third Reich, the downtown provacatuese, Tammy Faye Starlite, will portray the sublimely Teutonic, glamorously decadent Velvet Underground chanteuse, Nico (nee Christa Paffgen) in a dark, Weimar-cum Warhol Kabaret Konzert, and will sing some of Nico's most beloved lieder, such as "Femme Fatale," All Tomorrow's Parties," "I'll Be Your Mirror" as well as Nico's classic covers of such classic tunes as David Bowie's "Heroes, Rogers and Hart's "My Funny Valentine, "Bob Dylan's "I'll Keep It With Mine," The Doors' "The End, and she'll finish with a rousing finale of "Deutschland Uber Alles" (in German, of course). It will be a crystalline multi-media nacht to remember, with dreamlike reminiscences about Lou Reed (and Jews in general), Andy Warhol and Alain Delon. Nico was, and remains, a heroin(e) and emblem for these dark days of civil unrest and our inherent fascination with the sybaritic self-destruction and the willful deconstruction of beauty.

Khaela Maricich is a performing artist and pop musician. Under the name, The Blow, she has released a number of music albums and toured nationally and internationally. Working in music venues as well as art spaces, her performances explore and exploit the conventions of each format. Her recent work interweaves elements of narrative performance art with traditional pop-show dynamics. She has presented at such venues as The Kitchen, Irving Plaza, The Warhol Museum, Henry Fonda Theater, Great American Music Hall, and Wexner Center. She lives and works in New York City. $15

José "Pepito" Gómez has taken the U.S. by storm since his May 2008 arrival from Cuba. He has two NY Times rave reviews under his belt, received an award from France for best male singer, has a worldwide fan base and his latest CD with Cuban band Pupy y Los Que Son Son, is currently nominated for a CubaDisco 2009 award. He has earned the respect and admiration of fellow musicians, press and fans. His popularity all over the world was highlighted by sold-out venues like Italy's 5000 person capacity La Tropical. He also received an award in Cuba for his song on environmental awareness, "Tiempo Dificiles" (Hard Times). His tenor voice, both beautiful and strong, has a unique timbre which is very rarely found.

 

At Joe's Pub Gomez will unveil a breathtaking project which will highlight his extraordinary voice as he pays homage to traditional Cuban classics with a fresh and original jazz influenced twist. This project will feature a quintet with musicians trained in Havana's best conservatories. $15

A true master world musician, composer and vocalist, Brazilian American Mossa Bildner will enthrall Joe's Pub concert-goers with her rarely seen "Colors of Ritual" (COR) performance, Saturday night, July 10th at 9:30 pm, tickets $15. Through COR, Mossa recounts her lifetime of musical voyages through some of the world's deepest mystical traditions and that span 4 continents: Brazil, North Africa, Sephardic Spain, and the U.S.

Mossa Bildner's COR is a complex tribute to the transformative healing power of music, rooted in 3 Diaspora cultures. We will experience incantations from the Afro-Brazilian Candomblé ritual percussion that first captivated her as a young child growing up in Rio; her mystical encounters with Gnawa Sufi trance musicians in Morocco as a young adult; and her later soulful fascination with Andalusian Sephardic poetic chants, known as piyuttim.

All 3 distinct, ancient styles flow back and forth in vibrant, dynamic sequencing, tracing Mossa's deeply personal journey throughout those diverse spiritual traditions - sung in Brazilian Portuguese, Yoruba, Arabic, Hebrew, and English - and are seamlessly woven together with contemporary jazz improvisation and electronic beat textures. The DJ techno element serves as manifestation of today's global trance sub-culture.

COR is a world musician's dream performance creation. With an ensemble of some of New York's great international musicians, it explores diversities in world musical cultures, discovers mutual intersections in scales and rhythms dating back hundreds of years, and unveils most unusual harmonies.

Featured special guest is famed Brazilian master percussionist, Dendê Macedo. The group also includes Xande Cruz, congas/Brazilian percussion (Brazil), Felipe Salles on sax (Brazil), Hassan El Gnaoui, lead Moroccan vocals/sintir/percussion (Morocco), Mohamed Bechar, vocals/percussion (Morocco), Zafer Tawil, oud/dumbek (Palestine), Emmanuel Mann on electric bass (Israel), Adam Morrison, keyboardist and COR Music Director (Israel-U.S.), Gilad on drums (Israel), and DJ Moosaka (Maine, U.S.).

Mossa Bildner created "Colors of Ritual" in 1997, and its significance as a major artistic achievement that promotes inter-cultural dialogue, tolerance, and understanding - received recognition through previous grant support from the Brazilian Consulate General of New York, the Andrew K. Mellon Foundation, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and New York State Council on the Arts, and The Global Afro-Latino and Caribbean Initiative Program at Hunter College.

You may have heard that the diminutive nation of Outré Island has been trying to build a bridge to the shores of America for some time. But with oil in the Gulf (sigh), designers are moving the bridge inland to the small town of Balthrop, Alabama for one night only!

 

Journey with us to Outré Island and experience firsthand its rich culture, ridiculous history and colorful citizens! Perhaps you've even met some of the familiar neighborhood characters? Fluff? Shakespeare? Robin Merry? The absurd comic sensibility of Christopher Rozzi reigns supreme over this bizarre microcosmic mash-up of Monty Python, Prairie Home Companion, and The Simpsons.

 

With musical accompaniment by Balthrop, Alabama--the Brooklyn Indie band that became a small town--Chris Rozzi's one man show is coming to town! THE FREAKERS BALL

Formed where the sidewalk ends and before the street begins, The Freakers Ball is the quintessential Shel Silverstein tribute band. Equipped with flight goggles and cowbell, The Freakers unshell Silverstein classics like "Cover Of The Rolling Stone" and "A Boy Named Sue" as well as lesser-known hits such as "I Got Stoned And I Missed It" and "I Saw Polly In A Porny."

Featuring an ever-growing motley bunch of characters, The Freakers Ball is riddled with: Eric Anderson, Dan Bogart, Matt Caplan, Asmeret Ghebermichael, Lauren Kennedy, Fred Lassen, David Phelps, Eli Rojas, Marcus Rojas, Jessica Rush, and Bryce Ryness.

Influenced by Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show, The Electric Mayhem & The Country Bear Jamboree, THE FREAKERS BALL serves to 'illusinate' that Shel Silverstein was much more than a writer and illustrator of incredible children's books. He also wrote some kickass songs filled with lullabies, legends, and lies. $15
