Broadway fans had plenty of reasons to celebrate this year, with dozens of shows having opened since January, hundreds of actors having made their debuts, and many more having returned to the stage for critically acclaimed performances. Not all news was good though, as we also suffered a loss of an incredible amount of talent.
Below, BroadwayWorld sends a fond farewell to those who passed away in 2014.
If you are even a semi-regular reader of this column of reviews, you know that about every three or four months, I post a compilation of observations of shows from the previous quarter of the year. This cabaret critiquing mash up happens for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that I admittedly see too many cabaret shows for the amount of time I have to promptly review them (and then, of course, the usual writer's procrastination sets in). So I have to prioritize the timeliness of the reviews based on the prestige of the performer, the length of a show run, the strength (or lack thereof) of the performance, etc. The quality of the shows in these compilations—which can range from a half dozen to a dozen reviews in one shot—are usually a mixed bag of outright raves, qualified positives, and constructive pans (I'm not a fan of the word “negative” in the reviewer lexicon). With that in mind here are a collection of cabaret show reviews going back to the start of a very harsh winter.
The critically acclaimed Brits Off Broadway festival, host to the UK's most innovative and provocative theater in New York City, returns for its 9th season of New York premieres of new British theater. Presented by 59E59 Theaters (Elysabeth Kleinhans, Artistic Director; Peter Tear, Executive Producer), Brits Off Broadway launches on Tuesday, April 1 and runs through Sunday, June 29. Produced by the Kimmel Center, PIFA 2013 combines the creative talents of both large and small Philadelphia arts and culture organizations to create innovative and new works. The biennial city-wide festival's 2013 curatorial theme is If You Had a Time Machine…with 50+ events presented in Philadelphia.
The Orange County Performing Arts Center's Free or All series continues this summer with the enormously popular and eagerly awaited return of free Movie Mondays on the community plaza. This year's line-up will be the biggest and best ever with five great movies: the timeless classic The Wizard of Oz with Judy Garland; the screwball comedy Some Like it Hot starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon; the Dickensian musical Oliver! being presented in partnership with public radio station KCRW-Santa Monica (89.9 FM and www.KCRW.com); the coming-of-age story Dirty Dancing featuring Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze; and the inspiring documentary about New York City school students learning to dance in Mad Hot Ballroom, which was chosen in an audience poll last summer. The Center has always been 'the place' in Orange County to experience Broadway's best and brightest, and Movie Mondays offers audiences the most fun and exciting musical and dance films under the stars and all for free.

Virtually every writer of note (including Ernest Hemingway and F.
