Mozart's The Magic Flute ushers us into a never-never land of enchantment, filled with magic, mythical beings and sorcerers. The mystical warrior, good battling evil, light versus darkness ā it is a tale as old as humanity itself. Today, we encounter this age-old tale through cartoons, and those very cartoons were the inspiration for director Dylan F. Thomas' new production of The Magic Flute. In Thomas' imaginative vision, our hero is transported into a cartoon world, where the battle of good and evil is transformed into a fantastic tale of initiation into manhood. Make no mistake: this cartoon is no children's show. We follow Tamino through the portal from the ordinary world into the cartoon realm, and share his journey as he faces death and is ultimately reborn through marriage into manhood. And all set to Mozart's surpassingly beautiful score, music that seems to come from a magical realm of its own.
