We are lucky this season to welcome the magnetic and virtuosic cellist Daniel Müller-Schott. Described in the New York Times as ‘a fearless player with technique to burn’, his performances of Dvo?ák’s glorious Cello Concerto established his reputation as one of the most exciting talents of his generation. Composed following the death of Josefina Kaunitzová, a woman Dvo?ák had long admired from afar, the concerto is a powerful study of longing and loss. Such raw emotion is offset by the rhythmic vivaciousness of Rachmaninov’s colourful Symphonic Dances. Originally intended as a ballet, these orchestral dances are now a firm crowd favourite. The New Zealand composer Larry Pruden opens the concert with his 1952 work, Soliloquy for Strings.
