Led by a spiteful witch, a trove of storybook characters’ stories intertwine as they chase their deepest desires through an enchanted forest. However, once they receive their happily ever after the unintended consequences of granted wishes unravel their worlds.

[NARRATOR/MYSTERIOUS MAN]: (he/him) 40s-50s. Baritone. An inviting and warm-hearted storyteller that guides the intertwining fairytales along. The Mysterious Man is an odd and magical man who lives in the woods. Speaks in rhymes and riddles.

[CINDERELLA]: (she/her) 20-30s. Soprano. A young woman who longs for something greater outside of her miserable household. She adapts to her surroundings very easily and is determined and brave. Please note that intimacy is required for this character.

[JACK]: (he/him) 18+. Tenor. A young lad who spends his days with his best friend, a cow named Milky White. He doesn’t know who he is yet but is determined to find out. Has a scatter-brained but sunny disposition.

[JACK’S MOTHER]: (she/her) 40-50s. Soprano. Jack’s single mother who is jaded but determined to create a good life for her and her helpless son. Has good comedic timing.

[BAKER]: (he/him) 30-40s. Baritone. A sweet baker who is unsure of himself. He is extremely caring and strongly desires a family of his own. Please note that intimacy is required for this character.

[BAKER’S WIFE]: (she/her) 30-40s. Mezzo. A witty and resourceful woman who wishes for a family and will do anything she can to get it. Cares very much for the baker but longs for more from him. Please note that intimacy is required for this character.

[CINDERELLA’S STEPMOTHER]: (she/her) 40-50s. Mezzo. The “vile and black of heart” stepmother of Cinderella. Her objective is to social climb to provide the very best for her daughters. Has a complete lack of empathy for Cinderella.

[FLORINDA]: (she/her) 20s. Mezzo. Cinderella’s beautiful, greedy, and snobbish stepsister. Has an extravagant sense of self-importance.

[LUCINDA]: (she/her) 20s. Mezzo. Cinderella’s gorgeous, vain, and smug stepsister. Feels a deep sense of entitlement and superiority over her sisters.

[CINDERELLA’S FATHER]: (he/him) 50-60s. He is typically very dismissive of Cinderella and puts his new family on a pedestal.

[LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD]: (she/her) 18+. Mezzo/Belter. A wide-eyed, naïve and spunky child. She is daring in the woods, but it can sometimes come at a cost.

[WITCH]: (she/her) 30-40s. Mezzo-Soprano. Wicked, spiteful, and stunning. A magical diva. While she is the antagonistic, she has moments of vulnerability, wisdom, and empathy.

[CINDERELLA’S MOTHER/GRANNY]: (she/her) 50s-60s. Soprano. The woodland spirit of Cinderella’s mother who offers Cinderella advice/The witty and fierce grandmother of Red Riding Hood. Has great comedic timing.

[WOLF/CINDERELLA’S PRINCE]: (he/him) 20s-30s. Baritone. A suave and charismatic wolf determined to capture his prey. The prince is good-looking and charming but he doesn’t always have the purest intentions. Please note that intimacy is required for this character.

[RAPUNZEL]: (she/her) 20s. Soprano. She has spent her life isolated in her tower and is desperately seeking to explore the world. Silly but ultimately kind and innocent. Please note that intimacy is required for this character.

[RAPUNZEL’S PRINCE]: (he/him) 20s-30s. Baritone. Brother to Cinderella’s prince. Competitive against his brother and in love with Rapunzel. Vain and selfish. Please note that intimacy is required for this character.

[STEWARD]: (he/him)30s-50s. Authoritative and punctual. He is extremely loyal to the prince and is dedicated to fulfilling his royal duties.

WHICH WAY TO THE STAGE

The year is 2015. Broadway superfans, Jeff and Judy, eagerly await the arrival of the star of If/Then to get an autograph. But when a sexy stranger enters the scene and upends their decades-long friendship, the musical theatre aficionados have to go off book to rewrite their own finale.

[JUDY]: (she/her) 30s Funny, intelligent, has bigger dreams than she can admit to herself. She is Jeff’s best friend. Sometimes gets in her own way. Judy is “real.” She is not unattractive, but she is not the female ideal. She’s just a real woman trying to make it in a business that thrives on a fantasy. Please note that intimacy is required for this character.

[JEFF]: (he/him) 30s, Passionate, talented. Has a great sense of humor, but deep down takes it all very seriously. He is Judy’s best friend. Jeff is also “real.” Anything about him that might come off as a typical “Queen” is extremely authentic. He is who he is and is not apologizing for it. Please note that intimacy is required for this character.

[MARK]: (he/him) 30s, Robert Redford’s character from “The Way We Were” if instead of being a novelist he was a musical theater performer. Good looking. Complacent. Things come easily to him. One minute you’re sure you know everything about him, the next he is surprising you in the most wonderful ways. Please note that intimacy is required for this character.

[ACTRESS/BACHELORETTE/CASTING DIRECTOR]: (she/her) 30s A beautiful young actress who seems to have it all/A drunk (and bigoted) Bachelorette/An exhausted casting director.

In 1853, American forces arrive on the shores of Japan determined to open trade with the isolationist country. The unwelcome western influence fundamentally alters the island, its culture and its people as told through the eyes of two friends whose choose radically different paths.

Roles:

All roles will be understudied.

All charcaters sing and move well, are of any age and gender, with Japanese and/or East Asian heritage. Knowledge of and experience with traditional Japanese music, dance, and culture is a plus. In addition to the listed characters, all will double as other roles including Shogun, Shogun’s Mother, Admirals, Samurais, Councilors, & Observers. Strong singers encouraged to submit.

[RECITER] – (he/him) 40’s – 50’s. Baritone. The play’s narrator who explains and comments on the action of the story. He will also occasionally join along with the play’s characters.

[MANJIRO] – (he/him) 30’s – 40’s. Baritone. A clever fisherman turned Samurai who is exposed to the western ways but remains immersed in the traditions and values of Japan.

[KAYAMA YEZAEMON] – (he/him) 30’s – 40’s. Baritone. A minor Samurai chosen by the Shogun to defend his country against the foreigners and later becomes Governor of Uraga. Kayama embraces western ideology and customs, creating tension with his friend, Manjiro. Feels a large sense of honor and duty to his position.

[LORD ABE] – (he/him) 40’s. Baritone. First Councilor to the Shogun who eventually becomes Shogun himself. Bends to western ideologies at a grave cost.

[TAMATE] – (she/her) late 20’s – mid 30’s. Kayama’s wife who fears her husband will not be successful in his mission to keep the Americans and is struck by grief.

In 2013, a sister secretly shelters her American translator brother from an increasingly powerful Taliban while he awaits the ever-delayed promise of his visa. On the eve of his son’s birth, the walls begin to close in, threatening him, her and everyone they love in a heart-racing drama with devastating echoes to the present day.

A fierce rock musical about a young musician, “Youth,” that discovers his musical calling and sets off for Europe, leaving behind his mother and comfortable suburban life. In his rebellion filled with sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll, he yearns for something in life that he thinks can only be found in art.

[NARRATOR]: (he/him) Black. 40s. High Baritone. Extremely charismatic and energizing storyteller.

[MOTHER]: (she/her) Black. 40s-50s. Mezzo-Soprano with strong belt. Youth’s mother.

[YOUTH]: (he/him) Black. 20s-30s. Baritenor. The punk-rock protagonist of the story – a young, Black musician from LA searching for meaning. Please note that intimacy is required for this character.

[HUGO/CHRISTOPHE/TERRY]: (he/him) Black. 20s-30s. Tenor. A militant music critic/an academic who moonlights/a bad kid at church. Please note that intimacy is required for this character.

[SHERRY/RENATA/DESI]: (she/her) Black. 20s-30s. Mezzo-Soprano with high belt. Another bad kid at church/an abstract artist and café waitress/a den mother and social engineer. Please note that intimacy is required for this character.

[MR. FRANKLIN/JOOP/MR. VENUS]: (he/him) Black. 30s-40s. Baritone. Church pianist, youth choir director, and the Reverend Jones’ son/a body liberationist/a performance artist. Please note that intimacy is required for this character.

Returned to London following a wronged banishment, barber Sweeney Todd’s thirst for vengeance against the corrupt judge who sent him away leads him on a murderous spree. Aided by his downstairs neighbor, baker Mrs. Lovett, the two concoct an unappetizing scheme as they terrorize the city.

[SWEENEY TODD]: (he/him) 40s-50s. Baritone. The “Demon Barber of Fleet Street”. Charming, full of revenge and blood thirsty. A brooding and dangerous barber. Please note that intimacy is required for this character.

[MRS. NELLIE LOVETT]: (she/her) 40s-50s. Mezzo-soprano. The disheveled and eccentric owner of a meat pie shop. She assists Sweeney in his murderous plights and develops a soft spot for him. Please note that intimacy is required for this character..

[ANTHONY HOPE]: (he/him) 20s. Tenor. A cheerful and country-born sailor with a heart of gold who befriends Sweeney. Falls in love with Johanna. Virtuous and kind. Please note that intimacy is required for this character.

[JOHANNA]: (she/her) 20s. Soprano. Sweeney Todd’s estranged daughter who is under Judge Terpin’s captivity. Beautiful, innocent, and longs to be as free as a bird. Please note that intimacy is required for this character.

[JUDGE TERPIN]: (he/him) 40s-50s. Bass. The target of Sweeney’s revenge and Johanna’s captor. Arrogant, authoritative, and wicked. Regularly makes the law convenient for him.

[BEADLE BAMFORD]: (he/him) 30s-40s. Tenor. Judge Terpin’s right hand man. Corrupt, conniving, and nasty.

[ADOLFO PIRELLI]: (he/him) 30s-40s. Tenor. A flamboyant and arrogant Italian barber who rivals Sweeney in a shaving duel.

[TOBIAS]: (he/him) 18+. Tenor. Pirelli’s adolescent and trusty assistant.

[BEGGAR WOMAN]: 40s-50s. Soprano. Believed to be Lucy Barker – Sweeney’s estranged wife. A desperate, haggard woman who roams the streets of London begging and pleading for spare change.
