2 contrasting monologues or 2 songs (bring sheet music; accompanist provided) or 1 song and 1 monologue. Bring picture and resume.

All (with the exception of Charles Halloway) should have strong movement abilities.
MR. DARK (30-40 male) High baritone. Seductive, charismatic and malevolent carnival owner.
CHARLES HALLOWAY (45-55 male) Baritone. Widower and late-life father. Defeated by life but harboring the soul of a hero.
WILL HALLOWAY (13 male) Tenor. Charles' son. Cautious rule-follower, desperate to find a way to connect with his father.
JIM NIGHTSHADE (13 male) Tenor. Will's best friend. Free spirit. Old soul. Seeking excitement beyond his small town life.
LIGHTNING ROD SALESMAN (30-50 male) Folk/rock baritone. The narrator of the play. Wildly unpredictable, off-center, a loose cannon.
MR. COOGER (30-40 male) Muscle/henchman and part owner of the carnival. Strong and silent.
MR. TETLEY (30-50 male) Character baritone/tenor. Town tobacco shop owner. Convivial, with a glass-half-full view of life.
MR. CROSETTI (30-50 male) Character baritone/tenor. Town barber. Irascible, with a glass-half-empty point of view.
BETH HALLOWAY (25-30 female) Soprano. Charles' late wife. In life, a grounded and loving mother. In death, a persistent, supportive sounding board for Charles.
MISS FOLEY (40-50 female) Soprano. Spinster school teacher longing for her waning youth.
DUST WITCH (ageless female) Wild alto/mezzo with a strong belt. Crazy, dangerous and seductive carnival resident. Right-hand woman to Mr. Dark.
YOUNG MISS FOLEY / YOUNG MR. COOGER (10-13 female) Miss Foley and Mr. Cooger transformed into their younger selves. The first, driven to madness over the transformation, the second, emboldened by it.
MRS. NIGHTSHADE (30-40 female) Alto. Jim's alcoholic mother, clutching tightly to the boy she knows will soon become a man and leave her.

WOMAN 1/ELLA FITZGERALD
Role is already cast.
WOMAN 2/GEORGIANA HENRY
ELLA'S cousin, traveling companion and dresser - also African American, spanning from 16 to 50. She is down-home dignified: her presentation is unpolished, but her spirit is shiny.
WOMAN 3/YOUNG ELLA
African American, aged 16 to 18 - a newly orphaned, homeless, runaway, doing what she can to survive, until a twist of fate takes her across a threshold into stardom. This actress also plays ELLA'S half sister,?FRANCES, from age 17 to 43.
MAN 1/NORMAN GANZ
Age 18 to 49. A son of White, Ukranian-Jewish immigrants; he experienced the depression as a child and saw the Ku Klux Klan first hand. Becomes Ella's Manager. Man 1 also portrays:?JOE Da SILVA, age 27, a Portuguese ditch digger, ELLA'S abusive step father and her sister FRANCES' father.
MAN 2/CHICK WEBB/DRUMMER
African American, drummer. Man 2, ideally under 5'5,'' must act. A 1930's hip cat with a good heart who suffers from a spinal disease which has physically crippled him, except for when he's playing the drums. He is King of the Drums.
MAN 3/RAY BROWN/UPRIGHT BASS
Man 3 must act. RAY is an African American bass player who falls in love quickly. In marriage with ELLA he acts in a ways that resemble insecurity and later?he proves classically indecisive.
