A hero swallowed whole by a firebreathing dragon, floating hearts and flying birds that swoop around the stage, winged boys who hover in the sky-a dazzling fantasy tale will come to life on the stage in LA Opera's The Magic Flute, an imaginative new production dreamed up by Barrie Kosky of the Komische Oper Berlin and by the brilliantly creative British theater company known as 1927. In response to strong ticket demand, General Director Plácido Domingo has announced today that LA Opera has scheduled an additional performance of Mozart's The Magic Flute, conducted by Music Director James Conlon, on December 13 at 8:30pm to accommodate audiences who would otherwise be left out.

"We knew The Magic Flute would be popular with our audiences, but ticket sales have vastly exceeded our expectations," said Mr. Domingo. "By adding a seventh performance, thousands more music lovers of all ages will have the opportunity to experience this extraordinary production. And, since the availability of affordable seats has greatly increased, I'm especially delighted that more families will be able to enjoy The Magic Flutetogether during the holiday season."

Special pre-performance festivities
The December 13 performance of The Magic Flute will have a later than usual starting time of 8:30pm. Audience members are invited to come early to enjoy the festivities taking place on the Music Center Plaza in front of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. LA County's holiday tree will be lit and on display, and LA Opera singers will perform seasonal favorites. In addition to the standard food and beverage options available on the plaza, the 'Tina Tacos stand will feature holiday tamales and Mexican hot chocolate, while Pinot Grill will offer Christmas cocktails and mulled wine. (There will be no pre-performance lecture in the Eva and Marc Stern Grand Hall on December 13.)

About the production
LA Opera's presentation of The Magic Flute will mark the first U.S. performances of a highly innovative new production of The Magic Flute inspired by the silent film era. Created by the British theater group 1927-founded by writer/director Suzanne Andrade and filmmaker Paul Barritt-in collaboration with Barrie Kosky, artistic director of the Komische Oper Berlin, the staging was first seen last year in Berlin, playing to sold-out houses and rave reviews. James Conlon will conduct a cast led by two fast-rising young American singers making their role debuts:soprano Janai Brugger, an alumna of LA Opera's young artist program, as Pamina, and tenor Lawrence Brownlee as Tamino, which will also be his first appearance with LA Opera. Also making their LA Opera debuts will be soprano Erika Miklósa as the Queen of the Night, bass Evan Boyer as Sarastro and Russian baritone Rodion Pogossov as Papageno. The production is co-directed by Mr. Kosky and Ms. Andrade, with animation created by Mr. Barritt. Esther Bialas is the scenery and costume designer and Grant Gershon, LA Opera's Resident Conductor, serves as chorus master.

Tickets are currently available for all performances of The Magic Flute at LA Opera. There is a 50% discount for children ages nine through 17. (This production is not recommended for children younger than nine.) Tickets start at $19 and can be purchased in person at the LA Opera Box Office at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, by phone at 213.972.8001 or online at www.LAOpera.com.
