Trisha Brown Dance Company Set for 'NIGHT OF PHILOSOPHY' at Brooklyn Public Library

The Trisha Brown Dance Company will be the featured performing artists at A Night of Philosophy & Ideas at the Central Library of Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) from Saturday, January 28 to Sunday, January 29.

Co-presented by BPL and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, A Night of Philosophy & Ideas is an all-night marathon of philosophical debate, performances, screenings, readings and music featuring over 50 of the world's foremost philosophers, artists and thinkers. For the first time, Central Library will be open from 7pm to 7am for audiences to explore a wide range of events taking place throughout the building. Central Library is located at 10 Grand Army Plaza, Brooklyn. All events are free and open to the public.

The Trisha Brown Dance Company will present Trisha Brown: In Plain Site, a series of five performances, beginning at 8pm with Skymap (1969), an audio recording of a text written and narrated by the legendary choreographer Trisha Brown, followed by site-specific performances at 9pm, 11:30pm, 5am, and 6:30am. Trisha Brown: In Plain Site allows Brown's dances to be freed from the constrictions of the conventional stage and pairs indoor and outdoor locations with select pieces from Brown's vast repertory. This program will include a selection of her Early Works including Accumulation (1971), Group Primary Accumulation (1973), and Spanish Dance (1973). The dancers include Iréne Hultman, Amanda Kmett'Pendry, Mariah Malone, Brandi Norton, and Vicky Shick.

Trisha Brown Dance Company (TBDC) is a post-modern Dance Company dedicated to the performance, and preservation of the work of Founding Artistic Director and Choreographer, Trisha Brown. Founded in 1970, TBDC has toured throughout the world presenting the work, teaching and building relationships with audiences and artists alike. When Brown retired as head of her Company in 2013, the Board appointed longtime Company members Diane Madden and Carolyn Lucas as Associate Artistic Directors with the mandate that they present her dances in a variety of spaces, indoors and out, proscenium and alternative; develop, deepen and expand the Company's educational initiatives; and treat the Company's archive as a living organism to be used to better understand her work, in particular, and dance in general.

Continuing the momentum of its recently completed three-year-long retrospective Proscenium Works, 1979-2011 tour, TBDC is offering a new tour program, Trisha Brown: In Plain Site, which marks a return to the company's site-specific roots. Each work is restaged in a dynamic relationship to the setting, amplifying Trisha Brown's effortless affinity for naturalizing movement to the physical environment. To complement Trisha Brown: In Plain Site, the Company is reconstructing three pivotal works that accentuate Brown's profound connection to music. Progressive jazz sounds by Dave Douglas for Groove and Countermove (2000), the haunting flute of Salvatore Sciarrino's contemporary music for Geometry of Quiet (2002), and Jean-Phillippe Rameau's elegant baroque opera in L'Amour au théâtre (2009), reverberate in proscenium spaces. Brooklyn Public Library and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy present A Night of Philosophy & Ideas, an all-night marathon of philosophical debate, performances, screenings, readings and music. The public is invited to explore Central Library after-hours and participate in provocative forums on Artificial Intelligence, sex, slowness, time, reconciliation and more.

A Night of Philosophy and Ideas is produced in connection with La Nuit des idées, a world-wide event taking place in over 30 cities, including Los Angeles, on January 26, 2017, organized by the Institut français, Paris. Since 2010, Night of Philosophy 'happenings' have taken place in cities around the world, including Paris, Helsinki, London, Tokyo, Berlin, and Tel Aviv. In New York City, a Night of Philosophy was produced by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in April 2015, and was curated by Mériam Korichi. The all-night event, which took place at the neighboring Fifth Avenue mansions of the French Cultural Services and the Ukrainian Institute of America, was wildly successful, drawing over 5,000 attendees.

This year, A Night of Philosophy & Ideas travels to Brooklyn Public Library, the institution that provides New Yorkers, whatever their backgrounds, with access to virtually all of humanity's accumulated wisdom. With Jakab Orsos, former head of the PEN World Voices Festival, at the helm of BPL's cultural programming, the library is bringing rich, innovative arts and culture experiences like Night of Philosophy to diverse communities in Brooklyn, free of charge. In March, BPL and the French Embassy will host family-friendly "Philosophy for Kids" workshops moderated by Simon Critchley as part of the Tilt Kids Festival, co-presented by the French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF).
