Emory Friends of Dance Lecture to Consider 'Dance on its Own Terms', 2/25

By:

Emory Dance presents its annual spring Friends of Dance Lecture on Tuesday, February 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the Presentation Room of the Oxford Road Building on Emory's campus.

In her lecture "Dance on its Own Terms," author and dancer Melanie Bales will discuss emergent dance-centered research methodologies to emphasize the importance of dance history and core disciplinary knowledge over theories imported from disciplines outside dance.

Bales is a professor of dance at The Ohio State University and Laban movement studies analyst. Her choreography has received several state and national awards, including a piece on the American College Dance Festival Association (ACDFA) 1986 National Honors Benefit Concert. Bales has received support to commission dances for performance from choreographers including John Giffin, Iréne Hultman, Daniel Nagrin, Tere O'Connor and Catherine Turocy. The lecture will be based on her new book, "Dance on its Own Terms: Histories and Methodologies," which was published in June 2013.

This event is free and open to the public.

The Emory Dance and Movement Studies Program is a curiosity-driven environment that values collaborative relationships, unique perspectives that emerge from the imagination, and original movement research.
