DCASE Sets Lineup for SpinOff 2016, Featuring World Premieres and More

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) is pleased to announce the lineup for SpinOff 2016 taking place October 28 - November 5. A celebration of contemporary dance created by emerging and established artists from the Midwest, SpinOff will feature Chicago and world premieres, as well as a night of works-in-progress and a special creative workshop.

All programs are FREE and take place in multiple locations including the Chicago Cultural Center (78 E. Washington St.), on the Jay Pritzker Pavilion Stage at Millennium Park (201 E. Randolph St.), the Stony Island Arts Bank (6760 S. Stony Island Ave.), Links Hall (3111 N. Western Ave.) as well as three Chicago Park District parks. Minneapolis-based BodyCartography Project lays bare the power of physicality and presence in one-on-one dance performances - one dancer performs for an audience of one - in public settings throughout Chicago. Audience members can sign up for a performance slot on a walk-up basis. A dancer will then present a 30-minute personal performance, and together the meeting between performer and viewer generates the possibility for something new.

what the body knows by Barak adé Soleil

what the body knows is an in-depth project focused on the complex intersection and legacies of race and disability. Choreographed and performed by Chicago's Barak adé Soleil with additional performance by dance artist Jerron Herman and live sound score by Sadie Woods, this new dance suite of solos and a duet deeply considers how we move and are moved by interwoven cultural legacies. adé Soleil seeks to offer distinct reflections of diverse bodies on the stage and in the world, uncovering nuances of bodies aged, evolved and impacted by life's dynamic journey. Works-in-Progress by Ayako Kato/ART UNION HUMANSCAPE and MEGAN YOUNG | MEGLOUISE

In this split bill, two artists present works-in-progress at a special evening on the closed-door stage of the Jay Pritzker Pavilion. With the help of the audience, Ayako Kato performs bluefish part III -game/ritual-, a movement dialogue tracing the eroding, yet inseparable relationship between humans and nature. Megan Young | MegLouise considers the boundaries and binaries of intimate relationships in To Be Two, and immersive movement experience constructed by the audience with the performer. Reservations are not necessary for this event.

Megan Young | MegLouise received a 2016 Creative Workforce Fellowship, a program of the Community Partnership for Arts and Culture. Funding for the Fellowship program is made possible by the generous support of Cuyahoga County residents through a public grant from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture.

Colors by DEEPLY ROOTED PRODUCTIONS

A new choreographic work by Joshua L. Ishmon with original composition and live music by Sam Trump, this urban collaboration of dance and music will revisit Chicago's rich history through expressions of color. Curated by Kevin Iega Jeff, the artistic/producing director of Chicago's Deeply Rooted Productions, this world premiere production incorporates diverse contemporary dance styles including footwork, and hip hop and includes the work of guest artists such as Jamal "Litebulb" Oliver. closer (group) by BodyCartography Project

November 4-5, 7 p.m., Links Hall, 3111 N. Western Ave., (773) 281-0824

Building on the closer (solo) performances for one dancer and one audience, closer (group) multiplies into an expansive performance experience and dance party. Audience and performers meet in the playing space with a live DJ, allowing intimacy, empathy and new forms of engagement to unfold. Reservations are available at linkshall.org.

Workshop presented by YANIRA CASTRO

In a workshop themed "Making & Seeing," Yanira Castro will work with dance-makers and performers to move away from the lens of achieving an end/goal/ideal, but rather to investigate action and see the work for itself.
