Alan Simmons Art + Design presents "Observations: Ceramic Works by Gregory Miller" at a gallery debut opening and reception for the noted Dallas area ceramist. The event will be held this Saturday, April 6, 2013, 5:00-8:30 PM at 1415 Slocum Street, Suite 105, Dallas, TX 75207, 214-745-ALAN (2526), Dallas Design District. Mr. Miller's exhibition will run through May 11, 2013. He previously debuted his work in a group show at the gallery in December 2012.

Gregory Miller, a noted ceramist, has been a resident of Dallas since 2001. Born in Kansas and raised in Oklahoma, Mr. Miller was exposed at an early age to the world of art, design, and history through the encyclopedia. His mother introduced him to numerous art and craft mediums.

He pursued a BA in Art History from Oklahoma State University. A 3-D Studio class re-introduced Mr. Miller to ceramics. Under the guidance of Richard Bivins, Professor Emeritus, he learned the fundamentals of ceramics. An exhibit by James Watkins, Texas Tech University, inspired Mr. Miller to truly pursue the medium through the experimentation of form, texture and finish. He currently has his pieces in numerous residential and commercial collections and has exhibited in several juried shows.

One of Mr. Miller's unique and life-changing experiences in his career occurred during the time he curated an exhibit at the Gardener Art Gallery in Stillwater, Oklahoma. This exhibit brought attention to the art and culture of Tibet. During the second week of the exhibit, the gallery and Mr. Miller were honored with a visit from nine exiled monks, who created, among other activities, a sand mandala. This experience coupled with working in the ceramics studio opened the door for Mr. Miller to pursue a new path in his life both artistically and spiritually.

With the launch of Mr. Miller's first solo show, "Observations: Ceramic Works by Gregory Miller" at Alan Simmons Art + Design on April 6, 2013, his art work is to be experienced on macro and micro levels. He encourages his viewers to observe the complete collection then come closer and examine each piece. There are subtle variations in the repeated forms. As a keen observer of the natural and man-made world, textures and variations in repeated themes intrigue him. In many of his works, there are pieces that follow a pattern. However, the element of the unknown is the firing itself. Many variables have an influence on the finished piece, e.g., the placement and atmosphere within the kiln, the clay type, the temperature, and the glaze recipe.

"One of my favorite bodies of Greg's work is inspired largely by oceanic forms, particularly coral reefs lush with life," said Lindsey Carneal, gallery director, Alan Simmons Art + Design. "His ceramic ability to capture the dramatic shadows, texture, and 'pops' of color present in such an underwater scene is absolutely incredible."

"Greg's installations are truly fabulous," added Carneal.
