Resonance String Quartet Fellowship Launches with Balourdet Quartet as First Fellow
The international fellowship supports professional string quartet sustainability through mentorship and resources
The Resonance String Quartet Fellowship will launch on May 1, 2026 with the Balourdet Quartet as its inaugural Fellow. The Resonance String Quartet Fellowship, founded and led by internationally recognized chamber musicians Tom Stone and Daniel Roberts, empowers leading ensembles to build bold and sustainable careers in today's challenging cultural landscape.
String quartets remain one of the most profound and enduring forms of artistic collaboration, yet sustaining a viable career as a quartet has never been more difficult. Economic pressures and shifting audience habits have made long-term ensemble life increasingly precarious. The Resonance String Quartet Fellowship responds directly to this reality, offering an innovative model of mentorship, professional development, and community-building tailored specifically to the needs of professional quartets.
The Fellowship equips participating ensembles with the artistic, practical, and personal foundations required for twenty-first-century careers through a carefully structured program of intensive residencies, individual mentoring, and ongoing engagement. The program combines robust artistic exploration with candid engagement to confront the realities of professional musical life.
The combined experience of founders Tom Stone and Daniel Roberts spans performance, education, and arts leadership at the highest level. Stone, founding violinist of the Cypress String Quartet, brings decades of experience as a performer, artistic director, executive leader, and mentor to emerging ensembles worldwide. Roberts, founding violinist of the award-winning Castalian String Quartet, is Artist in Residence at the University of Oxford and Artistic Director of the Xenia Chamber Music Course in Italy. Together, they share a commitment to sustainability, artistic integrity, and collaborative leadership — principles that shape every aspect of the program.
The Fellowship's pilot year will focus on discovery and dialogue. Through a series of intensive residential retreats in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Europe, complemented by individual mentoring between sessions, participating quartets will explore artistic identity, ensemble dynamics, professional strategy, and personal well-being. The pilot is intentionally iterative, allowing the program to evolve in response to the lived experiences, challenges, and aspirations of the ensembles themselves.
The Balourdet Quartet has been selected as the first participating quartet in the program. Widely recognised for its dynamic performances and adventurous approach to repertoire, the Balourdet Quartet embodies the artistic excellence, curiosity, and commitment to growth that the Fellowship seeks to support. Among its significant achievements, the ensemble has received the Avery Fisher Career Grant, was awarded Chamber Music America's Cleveland Quartet Award (2024–26), and won the Grand Prize at the Concert Artists Guild Competition — distinctions that underscore its growing international profile and artistic impact.
Their participation marks an important first step in building a global community of ensembles engaged in shaping the future of the string quartet.
The Resonance String Quartet Fellowship officially launches on May 1, 2026, with further participating ensembles and program activities to be announced in the coming months.
