Quintet of the Americas to Perform at White Box Gallery in NYC, 9/17

Quintet of the Americas will present Another Realm, Unusual Musical Combinations, a concert on Thursday, September 17 - 7:30 PM at White Box Gallery. 329 Broome Street in Manhattan.

Quintet of the Americas, Queens' renowned woodwind quintet, will present a concert that will feature music combining Western traditions with Chinese, Latin American, and African musical traditions. The sound of the woodwind quintet (flute, oboe, clarinet, French horn and bassoon) will be combined with electronics, harp, mbira (African thumb piano), and Latin American folk rattles and flutes in music inspired by the human spirit.

Guest artists will be master mbira player Chartwell Dutiro from Zimbabwe (http://chartwelldutiro.com/), and harpist Susan Jolles.

Internationally known Quintet of the Americas is Queens' own premiere woodwind quintet. Founded in Bogota, Colombia in 1976, the Quintet has specialized in bringing music from the Western hemisphere to audiences in the United States since its arrival in New York in 1979. The group has enjoyed an international career that has taken them to concert halls throughout the Americas and Eastern Europe, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Symphony Space, and the Library of Congress. Members of the Quintet are Karla Moe, flute, Matt Sullivan, oboe, Paul Won Jin Cho, clarinet, Barbara Oldham, horn and Gina Cuffari, bassoon. They are currently in residence in The Department of Music and Performing Arts in The Steinhardt School at New York University.
