Philip Glass Gets 80th Birthday Tribute by Australia's Finest Exponent

The Music of Philip Glass celebrated by Australia's Finest Exponent. Sunday afternoon Spring concert 17 September at The Independent Theatre

Andrew Chubb, Australia's finest exponent of the music of Philip Glass, will celebrate the composer's 80th birthday year with a diverse range of piano works including selections from the 'Etudes', 'The Hours', 'Glassworks' and 'Metamorphosis'.

The concert is part of the popular Spring Series at the spectacular and acoustically outstanding Independent Theatre in North Sydney and- as always - includes a mouth-watering selection of cakes and refreshments at interval.

Philip Glass @ 80 will take you on an exquisite 40-year journey through the music world of the famous American composer who turns 80 this year. This recital by Australia's pioneering Glass pianist, Andrew Chubb, will feature works such as the revolutionary 'Einstein on the Beach' from the '70s through to the rather intimate 'Etudes' of this current decade. Other well-known Glass pieces will including 'Opening from Glassworks', music from the film score 'The Hours' and 'Metamorphosis'.

Andrew Chubb is an Australian pianist, composer and teacher noted for his pioneering performances of Philip Glass's piano music in Australia. Since 2003, he has given numerous all-Glass recitals at various cities in Australia and during recital tours to Canada in 2008 and 2013.

His interest in promoting contemporary repertoire has included Australian premiere performances of compositions by Hans Otte, Heins Chur and Andrew Shapiro.

In 2007, he gave the first Australian performance of Otte's epic 80-minute, 'The Book of Sounds', on the AustralIan Stuart & Sons piano.

Andrew is a recognised composer with radio broadcasts of his work through ABC Classic FM. He is also a passionate and respected piano teacher successfully developing a number of early to Diploma level students.

Andrew Chubb was the first Australian to seriously promote and perform the music of Philip Glass - starting in 2003 with his Glassworks concert at the Newcastle Conservatorium.

Other all-Glass concerts around Australia and in Canada followed soon after.
The composer himself made two visits, performing at the Sydney Opera House in 1996 and 2000. Andrew performed Glass repertoire at the Independent Theatre in 2012.
