George Enescu International Competition Extends Application Deadlines For 2026 Edition

The George Enescu International Competition has extended application deadlines for its 2026 edition, which will take place from August 23 through September 19 in Bucharest, Romania.

Applications are now open to musicians of all nationalities born after August 1, 1991. The deadline for cello, violin, and piano divisions is May 17, 2026, while the composition division deadline has been set for June 30, 2026.

Now marking its 20th anniversary, the biennial competition will be held under the theme “In Pursuit of Excellence” and will include four divisions: composition, cello, violin, and piano.

Cristian Măcelaru will return as Artistic Director, conducting the opening concert and leading masterclasses throughout the competition. Guest conductor Marin Alsop will also appear, making her first appearance in Romania with the Romanian Radio National Orchestra.

Competition Overview

The competition will take place at the National University of Music and the Romanian Athenaeum in Bucharest. Preliminary rounds will be held at the university, with semifinal and final rounds presented at the Athenaeum.

Up to 50 participants will be selected for each instrumental division. Finalists will perform with major orchestras, including the Romanian Radio National Orchestra and the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra.

Masterclasses and Programming

Masterclasses in conducting, instrumental performance, and composition will be offered during the competition, alongside symphonic concerts and chamber recitals featuring jury members and guest artists.

Prizes

The total prize pool is €150,000, with first-place winners in the instrumental divisions receiving €15,000. Winners will also have the opportunity to perform at the 2027 George Enescu International Festival and gain international exposure.
