Cleveland Orchestra Presents Neighborhood Residency in Gordon Square Arts District, Now thru 5/17

The Cleveland Orchestra presents its inaugural neighborhood residency in Northeast Ohio from today, May 11 through 17, 2013, in Cleveland's Gordon Square Arts District. During this first residency, the Orchestra will offer more than 15 events for the community throughout the week, including performances by Cleveland Orchestra musicians, ensembles from the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra and Youth Chorus, a Cleveland Orchestra concert preview, and educational programs for local students. All of the events will be free and open to the public.

Leaders and representatives from Gordon Square businesses and associations have partnered with the Orchestra to plan and host the week's activities. Additional events include the presentation of a new video of a Cleveland Orchestra performance in Austria followed by a question-and-answer session with musicians, a City Club of Cleveland panel discussion on the impact of arts and culture on neighborhood development to be broadcast on 90.3 WCPN/ideastream, and a soccer game pairing a local youth team with Cleveland Orchestra musicians and staff. Orchestra musicians will also visit local schools to speak to students about their careers.

We look forward to making this an annual event and being 'at home' in many more Northeast Ohio neighborhoods."

The Cleveland Orchestra at home in Gordon Square begins with performances by Cleveland Orchestra musicians on Saturday, May 11 at Gypsy Beans & Baking Co. at 10:30 a.m. and at Stockyard Meats grocery store at noon. A 30-minute narrated and interactive performance for children ages 3-6 will be presented at 11 a.m. the same day at La Sagrada Familia. Actors from Cleveland Public Theatre and musicians from The Cleveland Orchestra will perform works influenced by William Blake at 6 p.m. that evening, prior to a CPT performance of There Is a Happiness That Morning Is by Mickle Maher, a play that uses Blake's Songs of Innocence and of Experience integrally in the script.

A Cleveland Orchestra chamber ensemble will perform at Battery Park Wine Bar on Sunday, May 12, at 6 p.m.

The Capitol Theatre hosts a screening of a portion of The Cleveland Orchestra's Bruckner Symphony No. 4 performance filmed at the beautiful baroque Abbey of St. Florian, near Linz, Austria, on Monday, May 13, at 9 a.m. Prior to the screening of the Orchestra's performance, Gordon Square residents and artists will be seen on-screen in a brief neighborhood residency preview produced by Ohio City's Northwater Partners. The screenings will be followed by a question-and-answer session with musicians about performing on tour. Free coffee and pastries will be provided. At 5 p.m. that day, Orchestra musicians and staff will join young people from the neighborhood in a soccer game at the Michael J. Zone Recreation Center.

A special City Club of Cleveland live radio broadcast on 90.3 WCPN/ideastream's program Around Noon, hosted by Dee Perry, will address the impact of arts and culture on neighborhood development on Tuesday, May 14, at noon. Later that day, at 6:15 p.m., the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Chorus Chamber Ensemble will perform at Sweet Moses soda fountain and treat shop. At 7 p.m. at the Happy Dog, a Cleveland Orchestra musician will preview the Gordon Square Cleveland Orchestra concert.

On Wednesday, May 15, at 6:30 p.m., members of the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra will perform at St. Augustine Health Campus. A Cleveland Orchestra chamber ensemble performs at Spice Kitchen + Bar at 7 p.m. The Happy Dog presents Classical Revolution and the Ensemble HD Live at the Happy Dog Record Release Party at 8 p.m.

The Cleveland Orchestra performs a free concert at St. Colman Catholic Church on Thursday, May 16, at 7:30 p.m. The performance marks the first time the Orchestra has performed on the west side of Cleveland since 1980. Assistant Conductor James Feddeck leads the program, which includes Mendelssohn's The Hebrides Overture, Prokofiev's Classical Symphony, Chaminade's Concertino in D major for Flute and Orchestra, with principal flute Joshua Smith, Ravel's Pavane pour une infante défunte, and Rimsky-Korsakov's Capriccio espagnol. St. Colman Catholic Church will host a post-concert reception for the Orchestra and audience members. General admission tickets will be made available on a first-come, first-served basis at Battery Park Wine Bar, Detroit Shoreway Community Development Organization, Gypsy Beans & Baking Co., Happy Dog, St. Colman Catholic Church, Spice Kitchen + Bar, Stockyard Meats, Sweet Moses, and Michael J. Zone Recreation Center beginning on Saturday, April 27, during regular business hours.

The Orchestra will perform an Education Concert at St. Colman Catholic Church on Friday, May 17, at 11 a.m., conducted by James Feddeck. The program includes Chaminade's Concertino in D major for Flute and Orchestra, with principal flute Joshua Smith, and Britten's The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra, narrated by Ward 15 Councilman Matt Zone. Students from local schools will attend. At 6 p.m. that evening, Cleveland Orchestra chamber ensembles will perform at 78th Street Studios, and at 9 p.m. in Survival Kit Gallery.

Cleveland Orchestra musicians and guests first performed at the Happy Dog in Gordon Square in June 2010. Following a sold-out concert, they began appearing regularly as Ensemble HD. The Cleveland Orchestra began a partnership with the Happy Dog to bring patrons from the neighborhood to Severance Hall (Gordon Square Goes to the Orchestra) beginning in the fall of 2010, and continue to do so twice each season. Gordon Square Goes to the Orchestra returns on Friday, May 24, 2013, at KeyBank Fridays@7 at Severance Hall.
