The Cincinnati Symphony Youth Orchestras present their final concerts of the 2014-15 season throughout April and May.

Highlights of the spring schedule include the CSYO Philharmonic's annual Side-by-Side concert on stage at Music Hall with Conductor John Morris Russell and the world-class musicians of the full Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, the CSYO Nouveau Chamber Players Spring Recital, and annual Memorial Day concerts with the CSYO Concert Orchestra and CSYO Philharmonic.

2014 Side-by-Side Concert Program:

**PROKOFIEV Suite from Romeo and Juliet

**DOPPLER Fantaisie Pastorale Hongroise
Clara Fishlock, flute/CSYO Competition Winner

*RIMSKY-KORSAKOV Russian Easter Overture

On Wednesday, April 22 at 10:30 a.m., the CSYO Philharmonic takes the stage with the musicians of the world-renowned CSO for the annual Side-by-Side Concert at historic Music Hall. This inspiring concert boasts an enormous spectacle of over 200 musicians on stage, with the professionals of the CSO turning pages for these talented high school musicians. The program begins with Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet Suite and Doppler's Fantaisie Pastoral Hongroise (featuring Clara Fishlock on flute) both led by CSYO conductor William White.

CSYO flutist Clara Fishlock, winner of the CSYO Concerto Competition, will be featured as a soloist for the Doppler work. Cincinnati Pops Conductor John Morris Russell ends the program leading the combined orchestras in Rimsky-Korsakov's fiery Russian Easter Overture.

The annual CSO/CSYO side-by-side concert gives these talented student musicians the rare opportunity to perform next to professional musicians, offering invaluable guidance and experience. The additional leadership of Mr. Russell and Mr. White allows these students superlative instruction that cannot be gained in their high school music programs. This concert is open to the public. Tickets are just $10 and are available through the CSO Box Office or online at www.cincinnatisymphony.org/csyo.

On Sunday, April 26 at 4 p.m., the CSYO Nouveau Chamber Players will perform its spring recital at Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Woodlawn. This performance is free and open to the public. Presented by Queen City (OH) Chapter, The Links, Incorporated and CSVA Multicultural Awareness Council (MAC), this recital features a mosaic of classical and contemporary music. A special reception hosted by the Queen City (OH) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated and MAC follows the recital. For more information, please contact the CSO Community Engagement and Diversity Department at 513.744.3254. Comprised of African-American middle and high school string students, the CSYO Nouveau Chamber Players have performed as pre-concert entertainment at CSO concerts and at numerous community gatherings. Designed to be a springboard for careers in classical music, CSYO Nouveau Chamber Players is an important part of the CSO's commitment to diversity and education.

On Monday, May 25 at 3 p.m., the CSYO will perform its popular Memorial Day concert at Seasongood Pavilion in Cincinnati's picturesque Eden Park. The CSYO Philharmonic will perform popular, classical and patriotic classics. Later that day, at 6 p.m., the CSYO Concert Orchestra performs at 6 p.m. in Blue Ash Towne Square. Both performances are free and open to the public.

The Cincinnati Symphony Youth Orchestra (CSYO), under the direction of CSO Assistant Conductor William C. White, is made up of students in grades 9-12 who represent over 30 high schools in southwestern Ohio, southeastern Indiana, and northern Kentucky.

Founded in 1964 by former CSO Music Director Max Rudolf and area music educators, the CSYO is dedicated to the cultivation of talent and provides outstanding young instrumentalists the opportunity to perform repertoire not normally available through their school music programs.

Students attend weekly rehearsals at the College-Conservatory of Music, are invited to attend CSO concerts at Music Hall, study with CSO musicians in sectionals held several times throughout the season, and give concert performances, often with peer soloists chosen through the CSYO Concerto Competition. An annual highlight of the season is the CSO/CSYO Side-by-Side Concert performed at Music Hall

A special contribution of the Multicultural Awareness Council to the CSO is the establishment of the Norman E. Johns Chair in the Cincinnati Symphony Youth Orchestra. This award is made to a talented minority student to cover the cost of participation in the CSYO. Students must first be accepted into the orchestra by means of the regular audition process in the fall; once accepted, students may choose to audition before a panel of judges for the award.

Additionally, the CSYO presents the Josephine I. and David J. Joseph, Jr. Scholarship each year at its Memorial Day Concert. Since 1991, the scholarship has been awarded to a senior student who has been a winner of the CSYO Concerto Competition and who plans to pursue a career in music.
