Award winning actor and singer Mitchell Butel will perform the role of Luther Billis during the Adelaide season of the Lincoln Center Theatre's lavish 7-Tony Award winning production of Rodgers & Hammerstein's SOUTH PACIFIC in the Festival Theatre from 29 December.

Best known for his work in theatre, Mitchell has either won or been nominated nearly every year as "Best Male Actor" at the Helpmann Awards, Australia's highest theatrical awards body. Working extensively with Opera Australia, Bell Shakespeare, MTC, STC, Belvoir and a variety of other theatre companies some of his most memorable roles have ranged from "The Mikado" to "Avenue Q".

Mitchell has received two Helpmann Awards for 'The Venetian Twins' and 'Avenue Q', with Helpmann nominations for 'Little Me', 'Summer Rain' and 'The Republic of Myopia', together with nominations for Green Room Awards for 'Piaf' and 'Hair'. Mitchell has been described by The Age as "exceptional....a comic actor of infinite resource, invention and exquisite timing..."

On his forthcoming role, Mitchell says "I'm thrilled to be joining the cast of SOUTH PACIFIC in Adelaide. It's a show and a production I love, and Luther Billis is a role I've coveted for many years. Rat cunning, chutzpah and hilarity all rolled into one man. I can't wait!"

And with the show-stopping hit, 'There is Nothing Like a Dame', Mitchell is bound to win over a new legion of fans as crafty Luther Billis, a role he will revel in.

Mitchell Butel joins acclaimed opera star Teddy Tahu Rhodes, Australia's four time Gold Logie award-winning actress Lisa McCune and sensational Christine Anu, in the Adelaide season of SOUTH PACIFIC, which features a cast of 40 with a glorious score played by the superb 26 piece Adelaide Art Orchestra, including 'Some Enchanted Evening', 'I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair', 'Bali Ha'i' and 'Happy Talk'.
