Adelaide Youth Orchestras Presents SWEEPING ROMANCE, a Concert of Premieres and New Works

Adelaide's best and brightest young musicians will sweep audiences off their feet with a concert of romantic classical masterpieces when Adelaide Youth Orchestra presents Maestro Series 3: Sweeping Romance on Sunday, September 11.

The third major concert of AdYO's 2016 program, Maestro Series 3: Sweeping Romance will see AdYO present a delightfully evocative afternoon of classical music, including the South Australian premiere of new work Sinfonietta by award-winning Melbourne composer, conductor and pianist, Stefan Cassomenos.

One of Australia's most vibrant and versatile musicians, Cassomenos was recently invited as the first Australian composer to create a work for the international celebration of Beethoven's 250th anniversary in 2020 in Bonn, Germany.

The orchestra will also perform Chausson's seldom heard but beautiful and lyrical Poème for Violin and Orchestra with internationally renowned violinist Elizabeth Layton.

Elizabeth Layton was recently appointed Head of Strings and Senior Lecturer in Violin at the Elder Conservatorium of Music at the University of Adelaide. A graduate of both the prestigious Yehudi Menuhin School in the UK and the Juilliard School in New York, London-born, Adelaide-based Layton began her concert career in stunning fashion at age 12 when she was invited to perform with Lord Yehudi Menuhin and his sister Hephzibah on stage at London's Royal Festival Hall.

Since then she has played with the London Philharmonia and the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and has been guest concertmaster with symphony orchestras around Australia. She has toured with prestigious chamber groups Selby & Friends and the Australian String Quartet.

Finally, rounding out the Maestro 3: Sweeping Romance program will be Tchaikovsky's Symphony No 4 in F Minor.

AdYO Artistic Director Keith Crellin said: "This is probably my favourite Tchaikovsky symphony. It is a work full of unforgettable melodies, wonderful textures and colours. This is Tchaikovsky at his most mature and as such is a real challenge for my young players; a challenge I am sure they will accept with their usual great enthusiasm and energy. It is a fitting conclusion to what will be I am sure a varied and exciting concert."

The flagship of Adelaide Youth Orchestras' four orchestras, AdYO comprises 80 of South Australia's most talented young musicians. Hand-picked by annual audition, each AdYO member is tutored by professional musicians from the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, the SA Police Band and the Elder Conservatorium of Music.
