Widely renowned for fueling the resurrection of Handel’s operas, City Opera continues its exploration of the Baroque by presenting the New York premiere of Georg Philipp Telemann’s 1726 opera Orpheus. Rediscovered only in the late 20th century, this inventive score showcases the composer’s progressive spirit and vivid imagination.
The tri-lingual libretto in German, French, and Italian features text drawn from operas by Handel and Lully and offers a unique twist on the Orpheus myth, focusing on the character Orasia, Queen of Thrace, whose jealousy brings about the destruction of Orpheus and Eurydice.
Debut artist Daniel Teadt sings the title role in this new production staged at El Museo del Barrio (1230 Fifth Avenue between 104th and 105th Streets). Performed in German, French, and Italian with English supertitles.
New York City Ballet announced today that Russell Janzen has been promoted to Soloist, effective immediately. Peter Martins, NYCB's Ballet Master in Chief, made the promotion on Friday, October 17 following a performance of George Balanchine's Chaconne, during which Janzen performed the leading male role alongside NYCB Principal Dancer Sara Mearns. Janzen made his debut in the role, which Balanchine created for Martins in 1976, at the matinee performance on Saturday, October 11.

Actor Randy Harrison, best known for playing Justin Taylor in Showtime's Queer as Folk (2000-2005) is rehearsing Amadeus Mozart for the play Amadeus to bow in Santa Barbara at the Ensemble Theatre on October 11. What was life like, briefly, during Queer As Folk? Did you know at first that this show was unique and groundbreaking? You guys had so many fans. I know because I interviewed Gale Harold when he did Orpheus Descending a few years ago, and the fan response to the interview was incredible. I had comments from all over the world.
On Thursday, October 23 at 8 p.m., Orpheus Chamber Orchestra opens its 2014-15 concert series at Carnegie Hall with a program that includes Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 in C Minor, featuring Jonathan Biss, and Ellen Taaffe Zwilich's 1983 work Prologue and Variations in honor of her 75th birthday season. Written the same year Ms. Zwilich became the first female composer to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music, Prologue and Variations has been described by The New York Times as "splendidly crafted and shot through with a distinctly original utterance." Written for the Persian holiday of Nowruz in 2012, "Toward a Season a Peace" was premiered by Pacific Symphony, conducted by Music Director Carl St.Clair, in the Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall in Orange County, Calif. The work features Pacific Chorale (Artistic Director John Alexander) and Grammy-winning soprano Hila Plitmann. By weaving together sacred passages with texts by the great Sufi poet Rumi, Danielpour explores violence and war in the name of religion, using the season of spring as a metaphor for change and transformation. The work was commissioned for the Symphony's 2012 American Composers Festival, "Nowruz-Celebrating Spring," presented in collaboration with the Farhang Foundation.
