Today in 2008, A Tale of Two Cities opened at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, where it ran for 60 performances. A Tale of Two Cities is a musical with book, music and lyrics by Jill Santoriello based on the novel of the same name by Charles Dickens.The Broadway production featured James Barbour, Natalie Toro, Aaron Lazar, Gregg Edelman, and Brandi Burkhardt.

As previously reported by BroadwayWorld, the Encores! cast of GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES recently went into the recording studio to put a cast album together. The album is now available on Amazon.com, and you can go behind the scenes of the recording of a medley from the show below!

Multi-talented actress, singer, television host, playwright, songwriter and author Kathie Lee Gifford hosted this year's Broadway on Broadway yesterday morning, Sunday, September 9th, presented by United Airlines and The New York Times. The event kicked off the 2012-2013 Broadway season with star performances from new shows and long-running favorites, accompanied by a live 30-piece live orchestra directed by Alex Lacamoire. As previously reported by BroadwayWorld, the Encores! cast of GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES went into the recording studio last month to put a cast album together. As per Megan Hilty's official website, the recording is set to be released today, September 4.

On October 12, 2012, The New York Pops orchestra will launch its 30th Season at Carnegie Hall with Some Enchanted Evening: The Music of Rodgers and Hammerstein.

This production of Stephen Sondheim's iconic tour de force on contemporary relationships features the New York Philharmonic and an all-star cast, including Craig Bierko, Stephen Colbert, Jon Cryer, Katie Finneran, Neil Patrick Harris, Christina Hendricks, Aaron Lazar, Patti LuPone, Jill Paice, Martha Plimpton, Anika Noni Rose, Jennifer Laura Thompson, Jim Walton and Chryssie Whitehead.

The song list and talent have been announced for composer/lyricist Charles Bloom's debut recording, titled Music and Lyrics by Charles Bloom: IN HERE. The album is due online in October from Sonic Landscapes.

For 12 years, Merkin Concert Hall's Broadway Close Up series has been taking audiences behind the scenes of classic musicals old and new with eye-opening interviews and inspiring performances. The annual Bound for Broadway show hosted by Liz Callaway gives theater lovers sneak peeks at some of the best new shows in production. This season's line-up includes:

A beautiful benefit concert called "In Full Bloom" was staged at Birdland on Monday night - created by Ryan Murray and starring incredible Broadway types like Clarke Thorell, Destan Owens, Nikki M. James, Aaron Lazaar, Nick Adams, and Ramona Keller. Joel Waggoner was musical director. The event raised money for The Wishing Kids Foundation, an organization that provides support for people with terminal illnesses. Obviously, with that cast, the singing was gorgeous and heartfelt, the stories were touching, and the crowd was thrilled to meet and hear some of their favorite performers.

In New York City, we're fortunate enough to have access to a bevvy of theatre-related events -- many of which are free or low-cost -- to enjoy on the days we can't get to a show. Here are a few that I have hand-picked: the events about which I'm the most excited. These ones get the official BroadwayGirlNYC stamp of approval for the month of August.

As first reported exclusively by BroadwayWorld, ANASTASIA - A New Musical is being brought to the stage in a 29-hour reading, which entered rehearsals last week, based on the hit 1997 animated motion picture from Fox Animation Studios. The musical, which is in its early stages of development, will feature the five songs from the film along with fifteen new songs written for the stage. Joining the creative team of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty will be bookwriter Terrence McNally and music director Ben Cohn. Joining the previously announced cast is Kelli Barrett in the title role of Anya (Anastasia). Patrick Page once again dons the role of the villain, Vladimir. Angela Lansbury will reprise her role from the film as the Empress Maria, and Aaron Tveit will play Dimitri.

MAMMA MIA!'s new Broadway company, led by Judy McLane, Felicia Finley, Lauren Cohn, Aaron Lazar, Graham Rowat, Daniel Cooney, Christy Altomare and Zak Resnick, just danced and jived in front of photographer Joan Marcus's camera for the hit musical's new advertising campaign shoot.
