REHEARSALS: May 25 – June 17 (flexible timing) PERFORMANCES: June 17 – July 12 (24 total performances) VENUE: Alexis and Jim Pugh Theater at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts CONTRACT: Paid. Non-Union. STORY: The Pulitzer Prize winning story by playwright Annie Baker, The Flick tells the story of three underpaid employees in a rundown movie theater in central MA, who mop the floors and attend to one of the last 35 millimeter film projectors in the state. Their tiny battles and not-so-tiny heartbreaks play out in the empty aisles, becoming more gripping than the lackluster, second-run movies on screen. CHARACTER BREAKDOWN: AVERY: Male, 20, African-American Avery wears glasses and red, slightly European-looking sneakers. He is deeply, madly, passionately in love with the movies. Educated son of a semiotics professor at a liberal arts college. SAM: Male, 35, Caucasian Sam is amiable and a bit rudderless, a high-school graduate still living with his parents. With shaved head and beat-up Red Sox cap, was into heavy metal for a time. ROSE: Female, 24, Caucasian Rose is sexually magnetic, despite the fact (or partly because?) her clothes are baggy. She never wears makeup and her hair is dyed forest green. Skylar: Male, 26, All Ethnicities The new hire. An untroubled young man who’s good at his job and probably has his own small passion for the movies. Also plays Man, a drowsy movie patron.
