Breakdown

MUCH ADO
Don John: (M, 30s) Don Pedro's bastard brother, captured in the war. The villain of the play. Dark-hearted and sullen. Doubles with Dogberry.
Dogberry: (M, 30s) The head of the night watch in Messina. Attempts to speak with an authority and vocabulary he does not have. Doubles with Don John.
Leonata: (F, 50s) The Governor of Messina, second only to Don Pedro in clout. Initially sides with the men against her daughter, Hero, but is later persuaded of her innocence.
* The Roles of Benedick and Beatrice have been pre-cast.

THE LIAR
Dorante: (M, 20s) Charismatic, sexy, handsome young man who is unable to tell the truth about anything, and revels in the euphoria of creative mendacity. Must be played with absolute truthfulness and sincerity. Actor must possess superb language skills and a strong sense of irony.
Geronte: (M, 40-50) The well-intended (some might say gullible) father of Dorante, who wants nothing but the best for his son – especially the right marriage. We learn, in the end, of his own propensity for masking the truth and his youthful indiscretions. Like father, like son.

Cliton: (M, 20-30) Like Sganarelle to Don Juan, or Sancho Panza to Don Quixote, he is the trusting, loyal servant to Dorante. He is also the direct, empathic connection to the audience, and must possess tremendous warmth, charm and humor.

Clarice: (F, 20s) Outgoing, vivacious and attractive, she is in search of the perfect husband. She is flirtatious, quick-witted and thinks on her feet.

Lucrece: (F, 20s) Best friend to Clarice, and equally attractive, she is also in search of a husband. More reserved and careful, though, she thinks carefully before she acts.

MACBETH
Macbeth: (M, 30s) Military general who is too easily tempted by power who problem solves through violence. Excellent language and stage combat skills a must.
Macduff: (M, 30s) Thane who opposes Macbeth’s rule and later seeks vengeance for the murder of his wife and children at Macbeth’s hands. Must have great emotional capacity and expressivity.
Duncan: (M, 40s-50s) Pious king of Scotland who is murdered by Macbeth early in the play. Actor doubles as the Old Man and Siward later in the play.
Lady Macbeth: (F, 20s) Macbeth’s wife. Even more ambitious and driven than he. Succumbs to guilt and madness over the course of the play.
Malcolm: (F, 20s) Politically savvy daughter of Duncan who takes the throne at the end of the play. Well spoken, intelligent, and somewhat manipulative.
Witch: (F, 50s) Leader of the three witches who tempt Macbeth to power and toy with his fate. Excellent movement skills a must.
