Breakdown

JEAN VALJEAN 35-40s. Sings to B (high lyric baritone or tenor with strong low notes). A poor peasants who rises to affluence, great natural nobility and diginity. A powerful figure, ideally a large man with a character of operatic size and passion. The voice needs to have a bright pop/rock sound and/or a classical sound of extraordinary textual clarity.

JAVERT - 35-50s. Baritone, F to F#/G, (Belt or classical, but must have a darker quality than Valjean.) Police Inspector who relentlessly pursues Valjean for breaking parole. He sees the world and its people in shades of black and white, and believes that no one including himself is capable of change or redemption. He is NOT the villain, but his idea of the law is merciless and unbending: a person is either right or wrong. Javert cannot understand Jean Valjean’s ideas of mercy and justice, and it his undoing. Must be able to believably balance against Valjean in strength, determination and power.

THENARDIER Late 40-55. Strong comic character role. A crooked innkeeper, later a petty, amoral thief. Greedy, irreverent, selfish, boorish, vulgar. Scary AND funny. Baritone, sings to F sharp.

MARIUS 20s. Clear, High bari-tenor (sings to high A) with a strong bottom (to low A). A member of the revolutionary student movement. Attractive and romantic but in a sensitive, 19th Century “Byronic” way. Doubles as Chain gang.

ENJOLRAS 20s-early 30s. High baritone (to G sharp/A) very strong singer. Charismatic revolutionary. Doubles as Chain gang.

FANTINE Late 20s, early 30s. Belt up to C, sings to E flat. Poor factory girl, struggling to support her fatherless daughter. Later is a pauper, a prostitute, a consumptive and a ghost. Earthy, her poignancy is appealing. Although finally defeated by circumstances, she should appear to be strong and a survivor. May double in “Turning” as revolutionary.

COSETTE 18-25. Fantine’s daughter (first seen as and played by a child) delicate, elegant, vulnerable and beautiful. Falls in love with and later marries Marius. Legit soprano (to high C) with a legit, young “floating” sound, no heavy/wide vibrato. Doubles as lady of the evening.

EPONINE An enormous and beautifully ringing belt voice, to C in belt (sings to E flat). Daughter of the Thenardiers, but in no way behaves like them. Fired by an unrequited love for Marius. Small, gamine, waif-life. Wears her heart on her sleeve. Doubles as lady of the evening.

MADAME THENARDIER 40-55. Big belt/mix G sharp (below middle C) to D. Coarse, vulgar, beaten down by life and making everyone, especially little Cosette, pay for her misery. Excellent with physical comedy.

MALE ENSEMBLE ROLES
THE BISHOP OF DIGNE Low A to high E, 40-55
THE FOREMAN D (below middle C) to D 30-45
BAMATABOIS D (below middle C) to high D 30-45
THENARDIER’S GANG C sharp (below middle C) to E
THE STUDENTS Low A to F. Once student must have an easy legit high A natural.

FEMALE FEATURED ENSEMBLE ROLES The Factory Girl, Beggar Woman, Locket Wench, Hair Buyer.

AEA Children auditioning for the roles of Gavroche, Young Cosette, or Young Eponine may attend EPA or separate Child Call on 3/31. Please see separate notice for details.

LITTLE COSETTE (age 7 to 11 years) is Cosette as a child and the ward of the Thenardiers, who force her into slavery at their inn. She is a trembling little creature, underfed, beaten by Madame Thenardier and bullied by Eponine, but very sweet despite her circumstances. Height maximum of 54”. Range: A (below middle C) to C. Prepare 16 bars of a ballad or “Castle on a Cloud” from Les Miz.

LITTLE EPONINE (age 7 to 11 years) is the pampered daughter of the Thenardiers and a spoiled brat who taunts Little Cosette. The role requires no singing or speaking, but please prepare 16 bars of a personality. Height maximum of 54”.

GAVROCHE (age 8 to 11 years) is a willful, cocky, charismatic boy who lives on the street and hangs out with the ABC gang. Considers himself the leader of the streets. He is brave and witty. Think a young Artful Dodger. He has a dramatic death at the barricade. Height maximum of 58”. Range: B (below middle C) to G, prepare a feisty musical theatre song, “Little People”, or the character’s solo segment of “Look Down” from Les Miz.
