Roles Available:
New York City, 1959. A fading vaudeville comic tries to revive his career when presented with the chance to star in an avant-garde off-Broadway play. Inspired by Bert Lahr’s legendary performance in Waiting for Godot, this world premiere by Philadelphia playwright Bruce Graham tells the story of a man whose legacy is on the line and for whom comedy is a serious business.

CHICK SHERMAN (Male, late 60’s) A vaudeville comic (think Bert Lahr, Ed Wynn, Jackie Gleason et al), past his prime and dealing with the changed world of entertainment. Stubborn and very serious about his comedy. He has trouble connecting with his daughter.

MILT (JUNIOR) KARP (Male, late 60’s) Chick’s agent and friend for forty years. Adept at “handling” Chick because he really cares about him. He is more able to evolve with the changing times than Chick.

KATHARINE SHERMAN (Female, 23) Chick’s daughter. Very bright and very efficient, she works in the archives at Carnegie Hall. She wants desperately to find a connection with her distant father.

NATHAN WISE (Male, 26) Katharine’s co-worker. Confident, charming, and a little arrogant.

MATTHEW BARONI (Male, 30’s) Successful, bright Broadway director. Intense about his art. Arrogant and opinionated, he clashes with Chick and La Plant over the interpretation of the play.

VICTOR LA PLANT (Male, 40’s) Flamboyant playwright with a drinking problem. He has been a fan of Chick his whole life. Born in Alabama and living in Paris, he changed his name from Plant to La Plant to sound French. Speaks with a lilting Southern accent.
