Washington DC's highly engaging Theater J has brought Yentl back but this time in a musical form. The beauty and impact of YENTL is that the gender-bender central role is not just a plot device to have reverse drag be the knee-slapping gimmick of the moment. Yentl has no other choice but to live her life as a man, in the time and place in which the story unfolds. Theater J knows how to pick pieces with bold themes and this is no exception.
THE JUNGLE BOOK, as adapted by Tracey Power and directed by Shirley Serotsky, is neither a live-action version of the Disney cartoon nor of Kipling's dark stories. One song especially, 'Wood and Water,' about the 'Red flower,' which is what the jungle inhabitants call fire, would be at home in a sophisticated adult production. The set is a visual delight, as are the brilliantly designed costumes and props. The dancing -- especially by the monkeys, the serpent, and the buffalo -- is as memorable as the decorative artistry.

Casting has been announced for The Hub Theatre's spring production of LAUREN YEE's time-bending comedy, A MAN, HIS WIFE AND HIS HAT. SASHA OLINICKleads the cast as Hetchman, a retired hatmaker and title character of the piece. Olinick earned rave reviews as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in the Round House Theatre production of AMADEUS. This production marks his debut with The Hub Theatre.

We've been very lucky with the mildest winter I can remember since I moved to the DC area in 1985. And in February the list of theatre productions gracing our local stages are diverse and offer an endless amount of possibilities. So while the snow is on vacation why not visit your Nation's Capital and take in some of these shows. There's a lot of 'steam heat' on DC area stages and outside, so if you're visiting DC for the annual July 4th fireworks extravaganza, stop by and see a show before you roast on the Mall waiting for the concert and loud "booms" to fill up the sky. And if you couldn't get into the sold-out Oklahoma!, Aquarium, Clybourne Park, or The Importance of Being Earnest - earlier this year - you have a chance now! And then there's The Capital Fringe Festival with dozens of new shows to choose from.
The DC area is full of spring splendor with so many gorgeous trees and azaleas in full bloom, and our local theatres are filled with new colorful productions. So come visit the Nation's Capital and bask in the city's beauty and the power and joy of our local theatres.
