DIARY OF A SOUTHERN REFUGEE DURING THE WAR Wins the General Basil W. Duke Literary Award

The Military Order of the Star and Bars recently announced the winners of their annual literary awards. Among the announcements, University Press of Kentucky's new book Diary of a Southern Refugee during the War, by Judith Brockenbrough McGuire, edited by James I Robertson Jr., was named the winner of the General Basil W. Duke Literary Award, which is given “to encourage the re-issuance of out-of-print books that accurately present history of the War for Southern Independence.” The Military Order of the Stars and Bars is a patriotic fraternal society, founded by Confederate veterans to “perpetuate the idealism that animated the Confederate Cause and to honor the courage, devotion and endurance of those who dedicated their lives and services during four years of devastating war.”

METAL ALL STARS Set for Special One-Off UK Concert, Dec 16

There have been quite a few unmistakable characters that heavy metal has given us over the years. On Tuesday 16th December 2014, an impressive amount of these renowned names, including Zakk Wylde, James LaBrie, Gus G, Joey Belladonna and Dave Ellefson and many more, will unite as the 'Metal All Stars', for a special one-off UK concert at O2 Academy Brixton, London.

NoHo ACE to Premiere SCARY MUSICAL THE MUSICAL, 9/12-11/9

Lexikat Artists and MB Artists in association with the multi-award-winning NoHo Arts Center Ensemble (NoHo ACE) are thrilled to present a world premiere musical, SCARY MUSICAL The Musical, book by Richard Hochberg, music and lyrics by Richard Hochberg and Michael Paternostro, musical direction by Brent Crayon, orchestrations by Kenny Seymour and directed and choreographed by James J. Mellon. SCARY MUSICAL The Musical will begin previews on Friday, September 12 at 8pm; will open on Friday, September 19 at 8pm and run for eight weeks through Sunday, November 9, 2014 at the NoHo Arts Center, 11136 Magnolia Blvd. (at Lankershim) in North Hollywood.

BWW Interviews: James Vasquez Brings PAGEANT to the Cygnet Theatre

PAGEANT is back at the Cygnet Theatre and James Vasquez is happy to be the man that directs this new production. I was able to chat with him between rehearsals to chat about bringing the Glamouresse pageant back to the stage. PAGEANT is playing at the Cygnet Theatre through Sunday, August 31.

Guitarist Eyal Maoz Set for Weeklong Residency at The Stone, Now thru 7/20

John Zorn's renowned THE STONE presents a weeklong residency performed and curated by mesmerizing guitarist and composer Eyal Maoz. A mainstay of the NYC downtown music scene, Maoz is notoriously known as the bad (and crazy) boy of the progressive jazz guitar world. For six nights, he brings his new works evoking both cutting edge rock-jazz-Jewish extravaganza noise and chamber grace.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY on Track for $60 Million Opening?

According to The Wrap, Disney's next Marvel superhero movie Guardians of the Galaxy is on track to open in the $60 million range. Such a high number is surprising considering how the film will be featuring lesser known superheroes. Guardians of the Galaxy will open in theaters on August 1.
