Pianist Michael Roll to Perform with Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, Today

ANNAPOLIS, MD - British pianist Michael Roll returns to the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra after his 2012 debut, in the next set of Lexus Classic Series concerts at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts on Friday, April 1 and Saturday, April 2, 2016 at 8pm. Music Director José-Luis Novo will conduct the orchestra and Mr. Roll in Robert Schumann's Piano Concerto in A Minor. The concert will also feature Ludwig van Beethoven's Coriolan Overture, Charles Ives' The Unanswered Question and Franz Schubert's Symphony No. 5 in B-flat Major.

On winning the inaugural Leeds International Piano Competition in 1963 at theage of 17, the Sunday Times declared, "No country can be expected to producemany talents of this order."

Michael Roll's success at Leeds led to appearances worldwide, working withconductors such as Boulez, Boult, Giulini, Haitink, Masur, Previn, Sawallisch,Sanderling and more recently Gergiev and Steinberg. Orchestras have includedthe London Symphony, London Philharmonic, Royal Philharmonic, BBCSymphony, Leipzig Gewandhaus and Boston Symphony orchestras, with whomMichael made his American debut in 1974 with Sir Colin Davis. Internationalfestivals have included Vienna, Edinburgh, Hong Kong and Aldeburgh, where he performed together with Benjamin Britten. He has also appeared on sixteenoccasions at the Promenade concerts at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Roll'smost recent engagements included the Budapest Philharmonic, conducted byPinchas Steinberg and a return to the London Philharmonic, conducted byAndrés Orozco-Estrada among others. Furthermore, he appeared in WigmoreHall's London Pianoforte Series in January 2016. Next debuts include theStaatskapelle Weimar and the Taiwan Philharmonic National SymphonyOrchestra.

Concert tickets range in price from $38 to $68, and $10 for students. Subject to availability, student rush tickets are available one hour before the performance for $5. All ticket holders are invited to attend a free lecture before the concert in the auditorium at 6:45pm by British pianist and lecturer Dr. Rachel Franklin. These entertaining and informative talks enhance the concert experience by providing historical and insightful perspectives on the repertoire.
