Bramwell Tovey Returns to the Hollywood Bowl to Lead the LA Phil in a Pair of Concerts July 16 & 18

One of the Hollywood Bowl audience's favorite conductors, Bramwell Tovey, returns to the venue to lead the Los Angeles Philharmonic in two performances,Tuesday, July 16 and Thursday, July 18, at 8 pm.

In Tuesday's program, Tovey leads the LA Phil in one of the cornerstones of cello repertoire, Elgar's poignant, masterful Concerto, featuring Johannes Moser. The program also includes Britten's An American Overture and Sibelius' Symphony No. 5, followed by a fabulous fireworks encore.

Tovey continues the week Thursday with Berlioz' crowd-pleasing Symphonie fantastique. The evening opens with Dukas' Sorcerer's Apprentice followed by LA Phil Principal ConcertMaster Martin Chalifour illuminating Glazunov's melodious Violin Concerto.

Tovey completes the week and weekend, leading the LA Phil in three performances featuring Pink Martini, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 19 through 21.

A musician of striking versatility, Grammy award-winning conductor Bramwell Tovey is acknowledged around the world for his artistic depth and his warm, charismatic personality on the podium. Tovey's career as a conductor is uniquely enhanced by his work as a composer and pianist, lending him a remarkable musical perspective. His tenures as music director with the Vancouver Symphony, Luxembourg Philharmonic and Winnipeg Symphony Orchestras have been characterized by his expertise in operatic, choral, British and contemporary repertoire. Mr. Tovey, who is entering his 14th season as Music Director of the Vancouver Symphony, also continues his association with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, and as founding host and conductor of the New York Philharmonic'sSummertime Classics series at Avery Fisher Hall. An esteemed guest conductor, Tovey has worked with orchestras in the United States and Europe including the London Philharmonic, London Symphony and Frankfurt Radio Orchestra. In North America, he has made guest appearances with the orchestras of Baltimore, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Seattle, and Montreal. Touring is an important aspect of Mr. Tovey's artistic leadership with the Vancouver Symphony and in winter 2013 they embarked on a west coast US tour including visits to a number of brand new facilities in California and Nevada. To his already busy summer schedule this year he added return visits to the Philadelphia Orchestra in Saratoga, NY, and the Cleveland Orchestra at Blossom Music Center.

Praised for his rich, gorgeous tone and playing that can range from lovely and elegant to vigorous with head-banging, rock star energy, German-Canadian cellist Johannes Moser has been hailed by Gramophone Magazineas "one of the finest among the astonishing gallery of young virtuoso cellists." Moser has performed with the world's leading orchestras and works regularly with conductors of the highest level. Moser has gained a reputation for his variety of repertoire, ranging from core cello repertoire to lesser known works. He has received two ECHO Klassik awards and the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik for his recordings on Hänssler Classics. His concerto debut disc, which features the complete works of Saint-Saëns for cello and orchestra with the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, was honoured as one of Classics Today's Top 10 CDs of 2008. Following an album of works by Britten, Bridge and Bax, a disc of Martinu, Hindemith and Honegger concerti received great acclaim. The latest concerto album - the Britten Cello Symphony and the Shostakovich Cello Concerto No. 1 with WDR Cologne and Pietari Inkinen - was released in January 2012.

Martin Chalifour began his tenure as Principal Concertmaster of the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 1995. Apart from his LA Phil duties he maintains an active solo career, playing a diverse repertoire of more than 50 concertos. Chalifour began his orchestral career with the late Robert Shaw and the Atlanta Symphony, playing as Associate Concertmaster for six years. Subsequently he occupied the same position for five years in the Cleveland Orchestra, where he also served as Acting Concertmaster under Christoph von Dohnányi. While in Cleveland, Chalifour taught at the Cleveland Institute of Music and was a founding member of the Cleveland Orchestra Piano Trio. Chalifour is a frequent guest at several summer music festivals, including the Sarasota Festival, the Pacific Music Festival in Japan, and the Mainly Mozart Festival. Maintaining close ties with his native country, he has returned there often to teach and perform as soloist with various Canadian orchestras, most recently with the Vancouver Symphony and Bramwell Tovey. Martin Chalifour has recorded solo and chamber music for the Telarc, Northstar and Yarlung labels. His latest album on Yarlung features solo music composed by Esa-Pekka Salonen and Steven Stucky, as well as Mozart and Lutos?awski concertos with the Los Angeles Philharmonic recorded live at Walt Disney Concert Hall.
