Breakdown

NOTE: The 39 Steps is the Tony Award winning play that had a highly successful 3 year run at the Roundabout, Cort, and Helen Hayes Theatres, as well as Off Broadway at the New World Stages. It returns to New York at the Union Square Theatre this spring. It is a theatrical staging of the famous 1935 Alfred Hitchcock film that involves murder, intrigue, espionage, and romance. Set in 1935 London and Scotland, the style is not camp, but satire done in high style. The ‘two clowns’ play their multiple roles like an expert vaudeville team, in music hall style, thoroughly enjoying themselves as they make their quick changes – and they are not above letting the audience see that enjoyment. A company of 4 actors play all of the roles. All actors must be superb technicians who can create many different characters and utilize many different accents. The transitions from character to character are completely seamless with no makeup, minimal costume changes and a set which consists of little more than a door and a few chairs. This is a highly physical show for all 4 actors.

RICHARD HANNAY
(30’s – early 40’s) Upper-class Englishman. Handsome, square-jawed leading man, who is quite aware of how attractive he is. Back in London after a time abroad with enough money to keep him idle. At loose ends, he’s bored stiff. A chance meeting at a West End show with Annabella Schmidt, a beautiful European woman on the run from spies, leads to Richard being framed for her murder. He goes on the run, one step ahead of the police, to try to clear his name and stop a spy ring from taking government secrets out of the country. The actor playing this role will not play any other roles. ENGLISH ACCENT . **PLEASE USE AN UPPER CLASS ENGLISH ACCENT AT THE AUDITION.

PAMELA / ANNABELLA / MARGARET
(20’s – early 30’s) One actress will play all three roles:

PAMELA: the classic Hitchcock leading lady. Beautiful, stylish, warm, intelligent, and feisty. She meets Richard by accident on a train as he is trying to escape from the police. Unwillingly, she becomes caught up in his life and escape, sure he is a homicidal murderer until she eventually realizes he is telling the truth and falls in love with him as well. ENGLISH ACCENT

ANNABELLA SCHMIDT: A mysterious Russian beauty, a la Garbo, being pursued by spies. An agent in a life or death game of espionage that she unfortunately loses. She is murdered in Richard’s apartment before finishing her mission. RUSSIAN ACCENT. MARGARET: A fresh and innocent Scottish farmwife, married to an older, cold and abusive man, living in the middle of nowhere. Thrilled when Richard stumbles across their farm. She helps him in any way she can, no matter the consequences. SCOTTISH
ACCENT. PLEASE USE UPPER CLASS ENGLISH ACCENT AT THE AUDITION

CLOWN 1
(30’s-40’s). a superb comic male character actor who will play many roles, with ages ranging from teens – 60’s, male and female, Roles include but not limited to the following:

MR. MEMORY: A West End music hall performer, whose act consists of knowing the answer to any question asked. His involvement in the espionage plot does not become apparent until the end of the show.

COCKNEY ACCENT CROFTER: A Scottish tenant farmer, married to Margaret. Cold, suspicious, and a bully, he is abusive to his wife and betrays his promise to help Richard. SCOTTISH ACCENT.
