Magical: Music to Make You Believe in Boston

If the Cape Cod Concert Band could claim only one holiday tradition, it would be this: presenting non-traditional programs, packed with selections that don’t sound like the music you hear at the mall. Opening with the fast and furious Sparkling Lightsby Matt Conaway, and closing with the New Orleans-inspired Holiday Jambalaya arranged by James Hosay, this program has plenty of musical magic.

And did we mention Hobbits? Yes, we did. The Band will present The Lord of the Rings by Dutch conductor and composer Johan deMeij. Drawn from his 1988 First Symphony, this isn’t the music you may recall from the movies, but rather was inspired by the original Tolkien trilogy. To prepare you for this epic musical quest, the Band will present Samuel Hazo’s compelling contemporary composition, Enchanted Spaces, and invite you to come along on The Procession of the Sorcerers by the renowned Robert Buckley.

The magic is majestic in A Winter’s Carol, Mark William’s gorgeous arrangement of the traditional carol, O Come, O Come Emmanuel, and it might just make you laugh out loud in Rollicking Hanukkah by Randall Standridge. That one’s a band and audience favorite, and it does indeed rollick!

This musical send-up of the fantastical and miraculous is presented free of charge to the Cape Cod community by the Cape Cod Concert Band, an all-volunteer 52-piece wind and percussion ensemble, conducted by Tom Borning. The Band is supported by audience donations, business sponsors, and a grant from the Cape Cod Melody Tent.
