BILLY ELLIOT chose an awful number to represent the show. Nothing about it sold the show to me. Interesting that N2N won best score over BE.

s&d2, I think you are a very courageous individual to say that here. I hope you are wearing protection some here think otherwise.

Totally agree, and to use the lyric "give em the old razzle dazzle' today is unforgiveable.

As I have said before, the Billy Elliot music and lyric are good not brilliant, but they work well in context with the movement, thus making it superb.

I think "superb" may be overdoing it a little.

Siding with SADM that N2N deserves book, but can understand why BE would get Musical in a split. But when have the Tonys ever been about art anyways? =P

Have to disagree there- the lighting is excellent- remember the Grandma's song- all that lovely cross light. And the focus is excellent. The angry dance also has very dyunamic and effective design.

Having seen both shows, have to disagree with you SADM. I think N2N has the novelty factor going for it- we've lived with BE for 4 years now, so it's important to remember its impact when it first arrived. I still find it more moving than N2N which I find rather domestic/ small of scope.

I too LOVE the lighting.. with the round spotlights changing to square ones (sorry, that's all i could think of to describe it!)

Congratulations Billy! Have a wonderful run in NYC and London

"I still find it more moving than N2N which I find rather domestic/ small of scope."

This, I think, is the show's true strength: American drama has always been about the everyman, the home story (probably why God of Carnage is being so rapturously received). The reason why N2N works as well as it does is because it DOES fit the form of Miller, Mamet, and other great American dramatists (even if it's not on their level) that's told entirely through modern powerpop music.
