Breakfast At The Haymarket#1
Posted: 5/1/09 at 8:47am
A new stage version of 'Breakfast At Tiffany's' has now been confirmed for the Theatre Royal Haymarket starring Anna Friel.

This has been in pre production for sometime now and was originally to be directed by Trevor Nunn. He is no longer attached to the project.

It is expected to set dates for a September opening and running for 4 months.

It's definitely not the Broadway musical version and I understand the script will be more faithful to the original Truman Capote book than the film. Sean Matthias is set to direct.

Now who will be playing the male lead? A young American film actor, perhaps?

I felt a bit iffy when I read that Anna Friel is to be cast but more encouraged when I read that Sean Matthias is to direct.

I still think it's a bad idea as comparisons are bound to be drawn with the iconic movie, even if it does go back to the source material.

Isn this going to be a re-worked version of the Bob Merrill musical? Or is it a totally new incarnation?

As if Sean Mathias wasn't enough reason to see this, Anna Friel as well! I thought she was going to try and launch her film career post-Land of the Lost, but I think she'll be a great Holly Golightly - if any of you have watched any Pushing Daisies I think she's got the charm and the accent down pat.

Besides, from a purely commercial viewpoint she might have enough celebrity pulling power to ensure something RUNS at the Haymarket...

Bob, it is nothing to do with the Merrill musical adaption. Its a complete new reworking bringing in many characters the movie took out.
Also, both the leads are to be played younger than they were in the movie and it is now to be set in the 1940s.

So is it a musical or a play? And if a musical, who's writing the score?

It is not a musical. It is a play adapted from the novel.
