Zorro posts closing notice - March 14#1
Posted: 2/9/09 at 2:33pm
The cast of Zorro were told this evening that the show will play its final performance at the Garrick March 14. Producers have said they have had difficulty recasting and also a “lack of confidence by theatre owners and producers in what the spring and summer months will bring during the current economic climate".

Does this surprise people? I saw the show a month ago, and it was completely full - that was a Saturday matinee though. Have weekday performances been playing to dismal crowds or are the producers just being cautious?

To be honest im not surprised.
I rang the other day asking about student tickets for the thursday matinee this week, whether i would be able to get them on the day.
"No, the cheapest tickets we do are £45" I was told. If they don't make the show accessible then no wonder they close because of lacking business.

Its been on TKTS almost every day - I got fourth row of stalls, direct centre for £30.50 a month ago. Don't bother booking in advance, just show up at Leicester Square

Seeing as Clark_MD has stretched the other thread to obnoxious widths, I have decided to share my D: with this one. My mother said she'd buy me a ticket to this, so we simply must try to get into town sometime before the 14th. It doesn't help that March is my busy month, and February is not much better. D:

I have not seen this show, but a lot of people have said how good it is and had a real good write up, so surprised it is closing.

I am bitterly disappointed that this great show is to close so far ahead of its time.
I was told about this on Saturday when I saw 'A View From The Bridge' and was a little shocked and many just didn't believe the rumor as they had been actively recasting. The cast wanted to know about it late Saturday but wernt told anything until Monday via agents.
Strange thing to do when its just as it gets the nomination for best musical.
If you haven't seen it, give it a go, its a great night in the theatre.
At least there's a cast recording to preserve the show.
Sad news but I'm sure its gonna be the first of a number of shows that will close in the next few weeks.
Lets just pray it doesn't send a panic ripple thru the West End like what happened in New York back in December.
Adios Senior Zorro!

Wow, I'm so sorry to hear this. I was hoping to see the show again on my next visit to the UK, but obviously that won't happen now.

LOL. I know, I walked past on Saturday night and asked again. When the show opened they said it would be out within weeks.

I cant help think this is more out of panic from theatre owners and producers, this is a dead season for shows and many will struggle, but to throw in the towel a few days after you get the Nomination for Best New Musical, the only british musical to be nominated just wreaks of panic.

Is it possible that if the show wins Best Musical on the 8th, the producers/theatre will give an "extended by public demand" notice??

I was sad to read about this on Playbill.com. On my 3-week trip to London last month, I saw this show twice; once alone and once with a group of friends who I convinced to come with me. They loved it; I loved it.

I even bought the album!

If they decide to hold it over a little while longer it wont be the first time a West End show has been given that second breath.
It would be great if it won and then went on to win audiences until September.

I was planning on seeing the show on Feb 20, but due to tragic and unforeseen circumstances, the London trip is likely off. I was really looking forward to it.

i managed to grab a £10 "best available" off lastminute.com and saw it for a 2nd time last tuesday. centre in the last row of the DC but it was by no means full so the ushers were letting everyone know during interval that it was perfectly fine for anyone to move forward...so i ended up with front row dc.

the rest of the theatre wasn't too full either. although the stalls did look pretty well filled, so for mid week and a lot of people deterred to head into the city due to the snow/transport debacle i guess it wasn't too bad a turn out.

the show itself is still in great form. and matt rawle is still as sexy as ever :)

so how do people think this will effect the supposed international versions? i mean, in my opinion, the show has a lot of potential and could be exported easily and successfully. i'd love it to head down to australia as has been suggested. if only so my fam/friends can see it (i kinda raved about it to them)

I know it shouldn't make a difference now, but I wonder politically whether Zorro would be more likely to win if it hadn't posted closing notices. After all, Honk! beat the Lion King juggernaut and there's a fair chance patriotism could see Zorro outflank Jersey Boys. As it is, I think JB has it now.

I very much hope that this will end up on Broadway in the not-too-distant future -- with Lesli Marghareta as Inez.

I'm really shocked at this. Were they pushed out of the Garrick by A Little Night Music? I was there recently on a midweek night and the stalls were packed. The audience loved it. I thought, this is going to run and run. I don't get it. Maybe a transfer to another theatre?
