If you want a small, intimate musical, try "The Last Session."

How about any of Jonathan Harvey's plays? Rupert Street Lonely Hearts Club, or Out in the Open perhaps?

'The Normal Heat is a stunning piece of work. I saw it at the Albery (Cowerd) with Tom Hulce (Amadeus movie) in the mid 80s and again in a studio production at the Kenneth Moore theatre in Ilford a few years later. The studio production worked brilliantly. fF you want to see your audience sitting there in floods of emotion and wiping tears away hours after curtain, this is a play for you.
re: Queer Theatre
At the end of its Broadway run Barbra Steisand bought the rights to the movie and it was rumored to go in to production so many times. It was then forgotten about until a few months ago when she announced she was taking it on again in 2010.
If its good enough for Babs, its good enough for you SADM2 lol

Please, it is a great piece.
It was originally done by The Royal Court Theatre and then transfered.
The other extreme to last week for you.

There is actually a legal audio recording of the play- with Raul Esparza, so no excuse. This is essential drama- and I saw Tom Hulce as well and cried for about 3 weeks after!

In 2000 the Royal National Theatre placed 'The Normal Heart' in its '100 Top Plays Of The 20th Century' list representing 1985. Other plays it held its own against that year were major plays such as 'Observe The Sons Of Ulster Marching Towards The Somme' by Frank McGuiness, David Hares 'Pravda' and August Wilsons 'Fences'.
*it played 127 performances at Albery following its season at The Royal court of 6 weeks.

I thought Blowing Whistles was one of the best gay plays I've seen - cast of three and straightforward set.

I've seen Rupert Street Lonely Hearts Club but it didn't do anything for me. I think a lot of gay drama from the 1990s was lauded simply because it was gay but actually isn't all that good (eg My Night with Reg).

'Lonely Hearts' and 'My Night With Reg' were certainly amongst the most over hyped piles of crap that hit the West End in its disillusioned days of being gay play friendly. 'My Night With Reg' being the wort of a really bad bunch.
'Beautiful Thing' was a whole different matter.

Another vote for The Normal Heart from me, wanted to see a production of this for years. I know what you mean about gay theatre in the 90's - lots of over rated tosh 'gay is not always good', lol, but i loved rupert street lonely hearts club. Only saw the tv version of Reg, and thought it was dire.

well we have chosen a play, its an original play we are writing (yikes) called 'Dog Tags'
Its gay themed, a love story between a marine and a struggling bar owner. It has a lot of other characters though who are not gay and have their own issues to deal with, it basically shows how one stranger who makes one decision has an effect on everybody he meets when he meets the barman.
Its a drama (so glad to be getting away from comedy) and has a cast of 8.

i will keep you updated
