It's come to my attention that while some people are totally down with posting images on the BWW message boards, others haven't quite got the hang of it. As one who finally got the hang of posting images after many many months of practice, I thought I might make a comprehensive user guide. It should, touch wood, be fool-proof. No more red Xs and "why isn't Google images letting me link it?"! Once you've read the guide, try it out yourself, and let me know if I've missed any vital tips. :3

The pictures are a little on the large side and will be fuzzy, but the important stuff should all be there. Also, apologies if it comes out a little patronising; I'm aiming to make it as comprehensive as possible, which means covering all the steps. Skip anything you already know.

So! First up, you need a picture. For the purposes of this guide, I thought it might be nice to use a picture of a baby otter, so I did a Google image search.

Rather charmed by the North American river otter second from the left on the second row, I click on him to get to the webpage where he resides.

From there, I go to the fullsized image and I right-click on it, in preparation for saving it to my hard-drive. It's important you do this; while the internet offers many free things, it's pretty annoying to be one of those people who pays good money for your bandwidth, only to have it sapped thanks to hotlinkers. Which is what you would be if you didn't save the image and upload it to your own space. Dirty hotlinker. Hotlinking is bad. Always save a picture and upload it to your own space.

I've saved this fella to my Desktop. My Documents is messy and filled with horror.

So! Bearing in mind that hotlinking to a picture on another person's space makes you the devil, it is time for you to upload your saved image to another space. I'm one of these awful smug people who paid money for her own space, which all these instructory images are currently dwelling on, but fear not! There is an excellent free resource for people who want to put a picture on the internet but don't have their own space.

And we call this resource: http://www.tinypic.com

You can do this part yourselves, right? Click the "browse" button, locate your image on your hard drive (my baby otter being on my Desktop), then hit the big green "UPLOAD NOW!" button. Which will bring you to this screen.

There's your image on the right, showing you that it has uploaded properly! Now, there's a few possible links here, so make sure you don't get confused. For posting pictures to BroadwayWorld, you want the "Direct Link for Layouts", here highlighted in blue. Select the contents of that box and copy 'em. You can right-click and select "copy", or you can just hit Ctrl+C. If it doesn't end in .jpg or .gif or whatever your file extension is, you've copied the wrong bit. Make sure you're definitely in the right box and do it again.

And then on to BroadwayWorld! Prepare thyself to post a message.

See that bit at the bottom where it says "Optional Image" and has a nice white box ready for you to paste the URL of your picture? Ignore that. If you use that, the image will always be at the top of your post, and you will only be able to put one image in per post. What you should be doing is posting your copied URL directly into the big white message box, a la.

What's that you say? You want to post multiple images in your post? Well, simple as! Once you've pasted your URL, simply hit return a couple of times (try to leave a gap between images or things could blur together; note how things are already crowded in this guide and that's with me leaving spaces everywhere!), and paste the next one (or the same one again if you're making a tutorial and can't be bothered going back to the beginning for a different picture).

And so you will end up with:

Voila! Posting images on BWW: a guide (warning: picture intensive!)

Important tips to remember

- Some image files won't work properly. This technique will not allow you to post a .png. As far as possible, always post a .jpg. (If you get to the end of this post and you can see Garth Algar doing the foxy dance, then .gif is fine as well. But .jpg is definitely the way forward, being both very suitable for photographs, and also not taking up as much memory space as other formats.)

- DO NOT POST HUGE IMAGES. Seriously, there is nothing more annoying than having to scroll eight metres to the right (and back) for every written line on a page just because someone wanted to show you an image over 9,000 pixels wide. The images in this guide are 600 wide by 450 tall, and that's bordering on obnoxious. If you can keep your images to this size or even smaller, then we'll all be smashing friends.

- If you don't have any imaging software on your PC that will shrink an obnoxiously huge image down to a manageable size, or if it's important to you that everyone sees your obnoxiously huge image in its full size, consider instead offering a link, or super-clear instructions on how to find it. While we can use various image-blocking functions on our browsers to kill your obnoxiously huge images, it'd surely help the discussion run smoothly if you're considerate and post only sensibly-sized images in the first place.

I think that's it! Have fun! Posting images on BWW: a guide (warning: picture intensive!)

If you use imageshack, you can just transload and don't have to save the image and upload it.

Just right the click the image, go to properties and copy and paste the address, so much easier!
Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist. Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino. This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more. Tazber's: Reply to Is Stephen Schwartz a Practicing Christian

That's called hotlinking, I touched upon why it is not the kindest of things to do. Also, there's no guarantee the image is able to be crossposted, so you can get the annoying red Xs. This way is guaranteed to not have any red Xs. :P

Thanks Weez. I'll try not to hotlink any more.

I've struggled to find any software that shrinks image sizes. If it can be done in Adobe Photoshop Album Starter Edition 3.0 I can't work out how. The only other software I have that will do it is on my digi-camera rather than my PC, so I can only shrink photos I've taken myself.
