'Imagine This' Blooper#1
Posted: 12/16/08 at 8:11am
While sitting thru the show again last friday evening with a friend who was seeing it for the first time, he looked at me with great surprise/puzzlement about 10min into the show and my confusion was seen by him also.
The character Max, played by 'Lutrec' actor, Sevan Stephan tells the German officer proudly that he his famous for his portrayal of Tevye in 'Fiddler On The Roof'.
!!!!!!
'Imagine This' takes place in the Warsaw ghetto of September 1st 1942.
'Fiddler On The Roof' played its first Broadway perf on 22nd September 1964.
'Fiddler On The Roof' was based on the book 'Tevye And His Daughters -or- Tevye The Milkman' written in 1894 by Sholem Aleichem.
Thats a pretty big research mistake to make by musical theatre writers writing a musical don't you think!

I don't recall the script actually using the phrase "Fiddler on the Roof" and the original short stories had numerous non-musical adaptations.

I noticed this reference too, but thought the same as exedore. Worth looking up, I reckon, just for trivia value.

No he says 'my Tevye in 'Fiddler On The Roof'.
I'm sure the stories were staged 1000s of times before the musical version, 'Fiddler', came along- you better go see the show again if you don't believe me!
Thats why we looked at each other in amazement!

Yeah, I heard 'Fiddler on the Roof' but wondered if perhaps there'd been a forerunner to the musical. I'll look it up...

Nope, looks like Mama knows best... the many times adapted story of Trevye wasn't called Fiddler on the Roof until the musical was written.

From the Sholem Alecheim website regarding the muscial's title

'The show's very title is testimony to the central role that nonliterary elements play in this particular "translation" process, and demonstrates how Sholem Aleichem serves as an icon invoking traditional East European Jewish culture. The image of "a fiddler on the roof'-which appears nowhere in the Tevye series (or in Sholem Aleichem's corpus)-was instead inspired by an early twentieth-century painting by Marc Chagall. The image not only gives the show its title but serves as a central metaphor- articulated by Tevye in the prologue, enacted in the staging and choreography (the "Fiddler" is a nonspeaking role), and echoed in the music.'

I have to say to be fair to Imagine This, that I only spotted two bloopers when I saw it....;

...Act One and Act Two*

(cymbol crash) Thank you, I'm here all week, try the liver....

Did anyone else go "ouch.." on the line about the audience not loving it? A tad ironic...

I'm with Exedore: I just heard Tevye and i'm sure I would have picked up the same point if Fiddler had been mentioned.

The WestEnders will listen carefully on Saturday night.
